The boy to win us number 19!

Step up Ryan Babel. Massive season for him. Lets stop playing him wide and use him as either back up to Torres or alongside him. the pace of those two up top will frighten the life out of defenders.

If Babel can have a good season and bag us 10-15 goals he could be the man that brings home the title. We need something extra from somewhere along with the goals that Torres, Gerrard & Kuyt will bring.

If he gets an early goal, some decent pitch time and can get on a run his confidence will be up and I don't reckon he'll look back. (Fingers, toes, nipples and penis all crossed in anticipation).

I want to see more John-Barnes-a-like than Des-Barnes-a-deadun-from-corrie-years-ago-alike.

So you think changing our successful formation to accommodate Babel or having him as 'back-up' will win us the title???
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I have high hopes for Babel, but I think it is best to keep expectations down for now. There was a lot of pressure on him last year and he failed to deliver. He has slipped from first choice LW to third choice. Long way back for the lad.

But he has done better than most in pre season so it's a good start. Now he has to impress when he comes on as sub. If he starts to deliver he will eventually get the chance to start games, just like Yossi did.

In fairness, if Babel produces as a back up to Torres we would win the title. Our problem at present is when Torres and Gerrard are injured. If Babel could cover he would prove to be the best addidtion to the squad.

I think that within our current formation having a goalscoring player who can play left side and can do a job up top with pace would make our squad look much stronger. At the minute Babel is really only that man in some fans minds and I don't see it changing. However he is young and while not optimistic I would love it to happen. It is pretty much a make or break season for him.

If Babel can reach close to the utility of Kuyt then we will be in business.

This wasn’t an attack on Babel, I too wouldn’t mind seeing him giving a chance in the middle.

But taking his post at face value, we’ll win the title if we change formation (not a good idea) or we use Babel as back-up for Torres (so Torres has to be out for Babel to play, or Torres plays and he remains back-up. )

            You see what I mean?

Every permutation weakens us in my eyes or has no effect (stays back-up).

Torres will not play every game this year. Surely you can agree with that? In that case, it would benefit us if Babel could step up and do a job in the absence of Torres. Hopefully Fernando has an injury free season and plays most games, but that's by no means a guarantee. Hence the fact I would like us to sign a striker. But if we don't and Babel steps up then that would be a definite plus point.

the biggest issue with babel is where to play him.

He's not a left winger because he doesnt produce anything from the left hand side but rafa keeps playing him there.

I would think he could be better on the right but kuyt should start the season as first choice and his play with johnson could be something to watch out for.

i would like to see him in the torres role or even just behind although his final ball isnt good enough to see him as a viable alternative to gerrard.

The talent is there but you cant build your team around him especially when gerrard and torres are in the starting 11.

Yes change the formation but only on occassions.

Afterall this system that is so successful has won us exactly what? **** all is the answer.

At home when we have played two defensive midfielders and struggled badly at times why not play two up top instead? take a gamble. the more players on the pitch that can put the ball in the net the better. its worked for utd for the past 20 years.

I think Kuyt will be able to provide decent cover for Torres when needed.

I'd love to see Babel step up this season though.

The problem with Babel is that he's got a lot of skill, pace and power but he's got a brain the size of a pea. He simply sucks at tactical awareness, especially his movements aren't intuitive it's as if he's forever 'thinking' and always ends up making the wrong decisions.

Take for example last week against Athletico, he made a great run and was almost off the shoulder of the last defender, waiting for the pass, but he didn't time his run properly and was offside at least two yards. I think it was Lucas who made the pass and he was left frustrated as there was no end product to the move.

To be fair to him though, he seems to have upped his work rate a little bit, but we need him more in the attacking third. I'm having doubts he'll ever progress to an acceptable level for him to be in contention for a first team place on a regular basis.

I hate Kuyt upfront on his own, the pace is zero and it depresses me to the point that I've actually pondered the thought of drinking a bottle of magners via my anus, ice and all. is it possible? enough of this, its the time of year where you have to be OPTIMISTIC.

i reckon that against smaller teams - and maybe not in the starting line-up but perhaps against crappie teams where it is 0-0 with 35 minutes to go................i think a formation of something like this could very well force victories:

                              --------------------REINA--------------------

                              JOHNSON----CARRAGHER--AGGER--------INSUA

                              ---------------MASCHERANO------------------

                              KUYT------------GERRARD--------------RIERA

                              ---------TORRES-----------BABEL------------
