I think this result was on the cards going on how pre season has gone. It's been said all summer but these days you can't turn form on and off like a tap.

Today we were very slow out the blocks and we were bossed in midfield by Huddlestone and Palacious - who was fantastic. But it was the type of performance that makes it difficult to single someone out, because the whole team seemed to want all day on the ball, probably down to a lack of movement in the players around them.

To be fair to Spurs they were excellent and they played an excellent pressing game, only dropping off slightly when we equalized. Had Bassong not scored when he did I fancy Liverpool would have won that game. But after he did Spurs dropped very deep and relied on the pace of Lennon and Defoe to break.

No suprises we dominated the play after that goal due to Spurs being happy with what they had. It would be nice to say this was down to Yossi coming on or down to Gerrard dropping deep, but that would be a very simplistic view on things. No doubt we looked better, but that was because Spurs sat back behind the ball and let us come at them.

If I'm being honest I would have to say our side look a lot less sharp and more unfit than they were at this stage last season. Maybe Spurs are just a very fit team.

I think what went wrong today will be turned around and I don't think it's too big a worry. I think we will struggle in midfield until Aquilani is fit, but that's just something we'll have to live with. In an ideal world we'd buy David Villa and drop Stevie into CM, but it's not going too happen.

A poor performance, but it is only the first game.

I must say I'm worried though at the quality of our squad. Take out Gerrard, Torres and Reina and we are a very average team. Just looked at the bench today, piss poor (other than Benny who is a good squad player).

We're one world class player less than last summer and one very good player less. Johnson could be the real deal but he's yet to prove it at this level. Todays bench was a little embarassing with Spurs's bench looking far better.

We're very slow through the middle of the field and pacey sides will cause us a lot of trouble. Carra, Skrtel, Lucas and Mascher are just not going to match a side with pace, we need someone to offer a little balance.

As much as some want to dismiss Alonso's contribution now he left, we haven't got anyone now to hold the ball up and Gerrard will start to sit deeper and deeper to compensate, leaving Torres more isolated than normal and he'll soon become unhappy.

Benny has to play every game for me (he's the best we've got at adding a little spark and creativity and Rafa was wrong not to let him start). Rafa was also wrong to spend £20m on a Aquailani when he hasn't played since March and won't play for at least another 2 months. At the same time, Rafa has not been supported in the transfer market to make the difference. We've spent far less than we've made through sales in the last year which tells us what state we're in.

We're so obviously missing some class in midfield. It doesn't need to be a £40m player, just someone whose played at the top level, can dictate play a little and hold onto the ball. Feck it, get Vieira in for a season or two.

1 game into the season and you're already writing us off, you should work for Sky.

That'll be the difference this year, what cost us the league last year was not the two defeats, it was the draws against the lesser teams.

For those that think the loss today is the end of the world, chill it's only one game and one we didn't win last year.

Man Utd have already won the league in May this year. As far as I'm aware no one can win the league ntil May 2010. So no we wont win the league this year
