Carra: How I stay fighting fit
    James Carroll 23, August 2009
    LFC Official Website

Jamie Carragher has revealed how he took up boxing during the summer to ensure he would be fighting fit for the start of the 2009-10 season.

The Reds vice-captain knows competition for places is fierce at Anfield and therefore says he will do all he can to stay in peak condition in order to try and retain a starting berth in the Liverpool first-team.

"I know it sounds stupid to some people but I never feel like I have cemented my place, that it can all be taken away from me very quickly," said Carragher.

"I always try to do something different each summer to try to get that extra couple of per cent. I went boxing, I've always eaten well and now I eat to the absolute maximum.

"We are all getting older, but another way of looking at it is Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel are getting more experienced which is going to help them.

"They are coming into the prime of their careers. I am not stupid. I am 32 in January. It will happen one day."

Carragher has started both of Liverpool's opening two matches in the Barclays Premier League this campaign.

A defeat at Tottenham on the opening day of the season was followed up by a rousing victory over Stoke City on Wednesday evening - and the centre-back admits he is thriving on the challenge of trying to help the Reds claim the title.

He added: "I would hate to be at a club where it didn't matter, where there wasn't that pressure to win.

"I wouldn't say there is no point playing in those circumstances but at least you know you are playing for a proper team here."
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I would've thought being a premiership footballer would get you in good shape too. Amazing that in this day and age we have a player who wants to get fitter, you'd expect the club to have every player in tip top condition.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

Fitness is one of those things which you can always improve. It may be hard to believe but even Sissoko and Kuyt could probably improve their fitness further

Dunno...Lucas apparently had to do his own work outside the regualr training in order to get physically stronger, so Carra wanting to go that bit further is no surprise...i expect they both had the full blessing of the manager and training staff tho, it will be just that there's only so much time within training they can do weights/physio etc, the rest will be spent on the pitch.

There is being fit and there is looking for that edge, boxing is right up there in terms of Calories burnt per session. I would imagine the idea is to be able to play for 120 minutes at as close to peak performance as possible. Great to see Carra's work ethic, I know when Packo came here is instilled some crazy tough fitness regimes that had our lads in tip top condition

Hopefully he doesn't take sparring to seriously or we might be even shorter at the back. Great to see this commitment from Carra as it was to see it from Lucas.

When i first read the the thread title i thought Carra had been caught red handed cheating on the wife or something.
