decent, but unassuming and ultimately not good enough for a central mid spot at LFC

That said, I think with Mascher in the team, the other midfielder has to offer quite a lot going forward. Lucas doesn't, hence Rafa bought Aquilani.

Agreed with the bit in bold. Also the other bit, though I have faith he will develop into a good player. But I'm unsure that he will shine in the system we use.

Let's face it. Going into the Villa game Lucas must have been bouncing. He'd been praised all summer long by Rafa and remained pretty much unscathed after the Spurs game. He got a great reception at Anfield during the Stoke game and played in a team that came away with a 3-0 win.

Rafa then speaks to the press and again praises him, saying it is clear how good a player he is. He then gets called up to the full Brazil squad for their next games. Now if after all that you can't fill the role the team requires then I'm guessing you are not likely to at all in the near future.

In the next game at Villa Lucas scored a freak own goal (can happen to anyone) and then gets pulled for Voronin with Gerrard dropping to CM. I'm guessing after that game and all the stick he's had he's probably not going to be so happy with himself.
      Forwards.......

Thing was, Lucas was shoving signs of being more adventurous and courageous in both his passing and running against Stoke.
Against Villa, I saw nothing of that kind.
Of course that could be down to a good Villa set up closing things down, but there were also times when space was available to run into with the ball, and he didn't dare take advantage of it.
He seems to lack the guts. He is too afraid to fail and lose the ball. He is not one of them players who brushes the dust off when getting decked after an attempted dribble and tries again. He goes into his shell. That is not good.

He's been here 2 years and yet looks like he only arrived last week and is still over awed by it all. It's nice that he follows the managers instructions to the letter but we need more industry and invention from that position, especially given he has licence to get involved in the game with Masch covering behind him.
He's an easy target. Gerrard was equally culpable and played very poorly and other more senior players than Lucas in the squad also need to take a look at themselves

Was very unlucky last night, not anything he could do about that goal it just happens but he shouldn't be blamed for losing the match. I do however believe he would be far better suited to a more advanced role, just behind a striker with us bringing in another defensive minded CM to sit with Mascherano.

If this even means dropping Stevie back into CM then so be it. Maybe say Mascherano as holding midfielder with a covering midfield of Gerrard, Aquilani on the left, Kuyt on the right with Lucas just behind Torres. At least give it a try.
              Christ, what a horrific thought.

Agreed in the first half Gerrard lost almost every ball played to him.

Would like to agree but I've used up this weeks 'lucas is ****' quota.

how many other lineups would Lucas get on in the premier league, seriously?

The problem for Lucas is that he isnt better than Mascherano, so he's not good enough to be THE DM protector for the back four. And he isnt capable of doing what Alonso did for us, so he cant fill that role either.

He's a tidy player, who keeps things ticking along and deosnt do a whole lot wrong. But in terms of genuine and catalystic impact, he offers too little for me.

He 'could' play as the more defensive of 2 holding midfielders and he'd probably do a decent enough job. But when we've got Mascherano, Lucas will never be able to take that role because Mascher's infinitely better at it than Lucas (and better than most) at doing that job.

I really dont think so. He wouldnt get into Chelsea's. I dont think Ferguson would put him into his first XI. And Wenger would favour a Denilson or Song.

City? Probably not. Everton? When everyone's fit, that's debatable. Villa? Perhaps. Spurs? Not with Palacios around.

Maybe 10-12. But how many other PL sides he'd get into, is completely irrelevant anyway. I dont care how many of our players would get into how many other sides. Every team has different squad members to fulfil different roles and every team has different needs. Anelka probably wouldnt get in our team with our system. Lampard wouldnt get in our team probably. Neither would Cech. Doesnt make them ****.

All it means is that some teams are strong in a particular area and less so in others.
