You Get What You Pay For

Glen Johnson - no one could question his fee now having seen the way the guy plays; he has been fantastic.

What we needed in addition is 1/2 forward signings of his ilk to push us on - they haven't come so now we will stagnate.

Even going back to Shanks; Paisley and Dalglish; we never bought quantity but always bought quality; regularly upping the transfer records to buy proven talent and increase competition; unless we get owners on board that will back Rafa (or even any manager) we aren't even going to stay as we are but come under more and more pressure to stop slipping back.

Thats the reality guys and we need to start accepting it.

Is this intended to be a positive thread or a doom and gloom thread? I can't tell.
    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

      It is getting rather difficult

I've been on holiday for a week or so and whilst I've nearly caught up on things, I am struggling with a couple of vanilla threads

Isn't there a function whereby the thread starter can specify the nature of his thread?

      Something like

      or

      Thanks mods
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"

johnson has been a good signing for us but 17 mill is still ver the top. if only rick parry was still here to curb rafa's spending!!!
People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

Parry would have let him spend 17m but it would have to have been on 4 mediocre players instead: 1 of equal quality to the existing team and 3 of which we would never see until they left on a bosman to sunderland!

Rafas problem since coming to Liverpool has been a weak squad. He's finally managed to get a strong first team and a few good squad players now and the team as a whole looks like one that should challenge for the league. But it is still missing the odd player which would make all the difference.

I think we would have got to this same stage years back had Rafa been given the funding to compete, but sadly this has never happened. Instead he had to ship out all the rubbish at cut price fees and try and bring in reasonable players at reasonable prices. It's a slow improvement and to ahve any kind of success you have to be very good/lucky in the transfer market. This method worked with say Agger, but failed with Pennant.

I think in general Rafa has been good at finding defenders, but they are the types of players you could normally pick up on the cheap and expect a good standard. Wingers and attackers on the other hand cost a lot of money and you tend to get what you pay for.

Everyone was praising Mark Hughes when Blackburn got Santa Cruz on the cheap and he bagged plenty of goals. But looking at his injury record now you can see why Bayern let him go.
                Forwards.......

Man City have spent (net) probably more this summer alone that Rafa has done in his 5/6years yet the squad Mark Hughes inherited was arguably stronger than the one Ged left behind.
Modern football is about money and we don't have enough of it so we've got to make do with what we've got.
Johnson is a great addition and hopefully Aquliani (sp?) will improve us some more when he is fit.
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Those are 2 flops that cost a lot of money. You don't always get what you paid for.
                      Oh I don't know.

sami Hyppia and Fernando Torrres would also prove that point

I would say it is not always down to cost. But it is about getting your first choice targets. Rafa wanted Simao and got Pennant.

There was a possibility Simao would have flopped, but if he was first choice there was more chance of him being a success than a cheap replacement.

Rafa also wanted Vidic but ended up with Agger. Personally I like Agger so no complaints, but you get the point. Rafa also bid for Evra but lost out. I don't know who we ended up with instead.

All of those were down to lack of funding.
