IMO rafa didn't want him to stay. if he did he would have publicly bent over backwards to praise him like he does kyut, reina, gerard and torres. alonso never got praise. he didn't stay because he didnt feel wanted. and that lies solely at rafa's feet. he wanted alonso out. that i am sure about.

Utter bollix ... most high profile transfers happen without the need to hand in transfer requests and in football things can change in 12 hours let alone 3 months, Alonso as far as I can see it, kept mum and basically left the suits to sort it out saying he would be happy what ever happened.

He obviously wanted out and fair enough, it happens and he left us for a team many consider the biggest club in the world in his home country in World Cup Season.

People do not know jack **** about what went on .. and untill they do or someone says look I am with the club or I know for a fact people should lay off the insults to a player who was for the most part a sensation player for us.

Every player comes out with the same line unless they have had a major falling out with someone at their current club an dthe situation is untenable. And Alonso would leave it to the suits because that's what he pays his agent for.

At the end of the day mate you loved Xabi. And who am I to tell you or anyone else to simply forget about him and move on? He was a classy player and a pleasure to watch. I have no issue him leaving, its with the way he left .....but then without going through 70 pages of that Alonso thread i also do recall probably 90% of posters being pissed off that none of us knew whether he was coming or going, yet he had made his mind up last may.......thats not the way to treat the best fans in the world is it?

He made it clear to Rafa he wanted to leave. He can't come out and say it to the fans in case the deal didn't go ahead. It was hardly a guarantee as the price Real thought they'd get him for was way below what we actually did want.

Look at the Gareth Barry situation last year. He made it clear early on that he wished to leave and put in a transfer request. When we couldn't afford him or wouldn't pay the price he was left in a very difficult situation and it took him a long time to win the fans over.

Now look at the Alonso situation and the Barry situation. Which way do you think was the correct course of action? It's nice to know but we knew Xabi wanted to leave anyway. But when the player admits it it can cause unrest if he stays. No point in admitting it until you know the deal will go through for definite.

I dont love Xabi or any other player in a Red shirt although Carra might be a grey area. But love the fans I guarantee he did as would most footballers who are adored the way Liverpool fans can lay it on ... Do you think Torres loves Liverpool fans .. I say he does .. thats not me being Naive thats me seeing with my own eyes the kind of adoration layed on these players which you will not get in most other football clubs.
