I thought Gerrard and Lucas lacked purpose and cohesion in midfield. I think they were also on different wave lengths and did not seem to know when to stay and when to go.

I don't think ITV know what they are going on about. I don't think either cleaned up for the other as they didn't need to. I think there was one cross field pass by Gerrard that put Lucas in trouble, other than that I think they were pretty bog standard.
    Forwards.......

I think the whole team were below par. Just one of those really ****ty nights but as the posts above say - a win is a win.
Need to step it up for West Ham on saturday evening.

One of the negatives for me was Skrtel. I thought he was woeful, out of position, silly tackes giving them freekicks unecessarily. Not good at all.

Skrtel kept going through the back of his man.

          He was very poor tonight.

Not a great performance by any stretch but we had more than enough chances to put the game to bed.

If we're not playing our best commentators will always decide that Gerrard isnt playing where he should be. In the first half it was 'why doesnt Rafa play Gerrard in CM more often against weaker opposition'. During the 2nd half and after the match it was 'Rafa really needs to play Gerrard in the hole where he can hurt teams, especially against weaker opposition'

Im also sick of Johnson getting all the stick about his defensive capabilities or it being talked about constantly and it being made an issue of.

I agree with McManaman when he said we'll play better against the better teams.

It's not easy to play against teams who aren't interested in playing football. Both teams were dreadful, although the onus is on the home side to show some initiative and attack. It's hard to find space when a team simply intends to defend. They were effective, and knew their limitations.

Reira was our worst player by a mile, he got loads of stick - and it was all justified. Insua worked hard, but he spent much of the game trying to deal with wildly punted balls from Reina and Gerrard. Benayoun and Lucas were the only players who played well tonight. Johnson showed signs of brilliance and Gerrard was only rubbish most of the time. I can't fault Torres tonight because the service was just woeful, he was getting hammered trying to deal with hoofed balls from defence.

I think we should just be glad we got 3 points and hope that we play much better against West Ham at the weekend.

3 points is job done, but the performance was pretty abject.

Torres has gone a bit stale for me, his first season it was like he played on speed everytime he got the ball, now he seems a little disinterested and generally ineffective could be down to the service he's getting (or not getting, with Gerrard moving back and Xabi in Madrid) but i think he needs to pick up his game.

I'm happy if we win like that without expending too much effort and energy.

We would have liked a second goal to put the game beyond doubt, but you could see that the tempo wasn't so high and that's a good thing considering it's the start of the season and the boys are still working themselves to full fitness, especially when Rafa has reduced the amount he rotates the squad.

If we played non stop high tempo as we are usually known for in Europe and then produced a sluggish performance at West Ham, people would be moaning. I don't think we were really troubled all that much and could have picked up a gear if we needed to.

I think it would be fair if we based our performance tonight in conjunction with the West Ham game. I'm expecting the boys to be right up for that one.

I was half watching this match and half watching the inter vs. barca match - and none of them where really good enough to keep an interest.

Positive from what I saw was that Riera seemed to try a bit and take the ball forward a lot. Beside 1 episode our defence looked solid, but they where hardly challenged.

Actually Voronin is not his direct replacement. Ngog is.
