bit dramatic isnt it? i think with insua and johnson pushing on it puts pressure on skrtel and carra but i thought lucas and masch were meant to offer protection.

thought cole gave them a hard time today. he held up the play well

Anyway Joe, who would you start in his place?
Right now? I would consider Kyrgiakos.

If everyone was fit: Agger and Skrtel.

Not match fit, and the others are not fit.

No one can stand up and say Carra has played well, because he has not. The same could be said for a lot of the team (if not all). I wouldn't say he has been any worse than Skrtel, and as Fredo said - he does offer a lot from the communication side of things.

But Carra is my favourite player so I will always back him.
        Forwards.......

Communication is something he has been lacking. Zonal marking, clash of heads with Skrtel etc

Carragher has been pretty poor, but then again not many of the lads have been particularly good this season. Carra however is the sort of player who knows in himslef that he is not performing and will do everything to address it. That said the sooner Agger is available the better.

He's certainly looking shaky at the moment, and he had a few dodgy moments last year. That said, our defence as a whole this season is awful and I cringe everytime we concede a free kick or a corner.

So far only Reina has been consistent - perhaps Carragher and Skrtel are making mistakes because they're having to work a bit more with Johnson & Insua attacking more than our full backs in recent years. Although they're making basic errors which have nothing to do with covering the fullbacks.

The thing is though, we don't really have any other options with Agger always injured.

I hope - and I think - that Carragher will play himself back into form.

we dont have too many options at centre back at the minute, hopefully carra can play through this bad spell and come out strong the other end, Hull city at home next, should be another three points and our two early losses wont look so bad

Skrtel has been pretty poor this season also. It does look like he's on the slide but we don't have better options. Having said that, he's always been prone to giving away pens so not right to focus on that.

They both looked like they were out on the beer last night. Skrtel was as bad as Carra.

They both looked all over the place again. Carra seems to keep making bad decisions. Its very unlike him but he almost seems like a headless chicken just running into bad situations

i can't remember a season that carra has started in 1st gear; ech season he has a few wobbles early doors & then gets stronger & stronger.

maybe a mod should have this thread as a sticky, then we can look back at the doubters in May......

I'm sure this is benitez' first choice too - Just needs the opportunity (fitness of both) to demonstrate this.

He had a terrible game but he has been nowhere near as bad as some make out in the rest of the season. I sometimes think he suffers because of how highly some rate Skrtel and Agger. Most games he is excellently personally from a defensive point of view but is less than excellent with his distribution although he rarely takes risks (unlike Skrtel). today he was all over the show though and deserves criticism. The generalisation holds no water for me.
