    Spearing

Everytime I listen to Talksh*te, view the posts on forums about the weakness of our midfield, I see and hear loads of comments about Spearing being quality and should be given a run, "that he is the future of the club", said this morning on the way to work...

Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's a bad player, but I don't see in him what I saw in Gerrard, Fowler or Owen. I see a good squad player, quite neat, good passing with a lot of hunger, but is he going to be the future of our midfield or are we so desperate for some home grown talent that the rose tinted specs are out?

If its too early to say then are the fans placing too much pressure on the lad at this stage by handing out these accolades and making the demands that he be handed a starting place ahead of Lucas.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

He's a scouser, hence the fuss being made over him. If he was French or something no one would be calling for him to start

He is still a decent player though, definately one to keep hold off.

Needs to be given more games imo, agree he is not the future of the club but still a good prospect.

He's been a little over hyped although his name has been banded about alot for a number of years ahead of many other local players too.

It will be interesting to see how he progresses.

What age is he anyway, 20?

therein lies the problem, to me thats all lucas is apart from the hunger sometimes

so why have a half decent 'jonny foreigner' taking that role when we can have 'one of our own' i am sure thats most peoples viewpoint.

i have no idea whether Spearing is better than lucas, I dont think he is right now......but i wish he would have had 48 games in the first team to improve his game!!!!

If the two players were equally as good as each other I have no doubt the Scouser would start, and I would agree with it, but they're not.

It's not just about hunger, its about playing the better player, it's as simple as that really.

See the point, but this lad Lucas was Brazilian player of the year, or young Brazilian player of the year or was it youngest Brazilian player of the year, whichever ? so it would seem, i say seem, to imply he has more potential than Spearing, although that's not necessarily true, or as yet proven, but maybe one day ?

Or it could have been a poor year for Brazilian Player of the year, or Young Braz...well...You know.

i reckon the fuss is created over spearing due to the disappointment and frustration over lucas' ability and aquilani's injury. but he is genuinely a real talent and in the games i've seen him play both reserves and 1st team he hasn't put a foot wrong and in the time where lucas isn't performing and aquilani isnt fit i think he should get a start.....scouser or not.

                      You also just described Lucas.

Most of the spackers who ring up talksport probably wouldnt recognise Spearing, they've hardly seen him play and know bollocks all about him - they just know that he's a CM and that Lucas isnt amazing - so 2+2 = Spearing in, Lucas out.

5 games worth of Spearing, and they'd probably want someone else in.

I even heard some doughnut ringing up the other day having a go at Rafa in all areas, slating him for playing Lucas and asking why he didnt play Spearing or Darby. The pundit (scouser who isnt Mickey Quinn, dont know his name) told the caller that Darby's a RB, not a CM. The caller said nothing more.

What ever the debate we need more homegrown players, be they from Bootle or Brazil, or Huyton or Hungary.

The premier league rules are changing and as such players that have potential who qualify should be given every chance.

In the case of Spearing, I think a lot of the fuss comes from the comments made by Heighway before he departed the Academy set up. He said that Spearing was good enough for the first team set up and should have been given a chance ahead of some of the dross that was in our squad at the time. And this was a few years a go now.
                          Forwards.......

Is Plessis in our CL squad, if so has he regressed badly and is going backwards in the pecking order?

I have to say I think Plessis is never going to make it. Willing, but not very able at all with a football at his feet. And that's being really kind.

The Spearing thing is just silly, totally agree with the OP. I'd love Spearing to be good.... but he'll turn out about the same level as Danny Guthrie I reckon. Its just become a case of "anyone but Lucas" for some fans. However we really haven't got any better options right now IF Rafa is going to insist on playing with 2 "holding" players.
