    Babel 'scared' into action

Dropped Ryan Babel is 'scared into action' at Liverpool as he bids to revive Holland career

Ryan Babel says he has been scared into trying to salvage his Liverpool career. Babel, 22, has struggled to impress since moving to Merseyside from Ajax for £11.5m more than two years ago.

He was dropped from his national squad for last month's friendly against Japan and World Cup qualifier against Scotland and admits his dreams of figuring in the World Cup finals could be shattered unless his situation at Anfield changes.

He said: 'Not being called up by Holland has definitely scared me into doing something. The situation for me is clear. This has to be the year for me. I am trying to do whatever it takes to get into the team.

'If I give everything and the situation is still difficult, then you have to be honest with yourself. But I'm still confident that I can be a very important player for Liverpool.

'For the first time in 33 games, I wasn't called up for the national team. That was very scary. It's clear I have to play a lot of games for Liverpool to earn a ticket to the World Cup. The Holland coach made a statement that he wants his players playing for their clubs.'

Meanwhile, defender Daniel Agger is in contention for Sunday's game against Chelsea after playing 68 minutes for the reserves against Manchester City on Tuesday night. Agger, 24, has been out with a back injury.

He said: 'It's good to be back and it felt good to be back on the pitch again,he said. 'It's always frustrating when you are out injured and can't play football, so to get back out there again was great.'
    From the DailyMail.

So what happens when there isnt a world cup or euro championships coming up the following summer? He stops bothering again?

i think it shows in his attitude and recent performances. he has upped his game and long may it continue.

Yeah long may it continue, but it's for the wrong reasons and it'll stop continuing once the world cup is over.

i reckon he's just as scared of losing his place for qualifiers as well. every player wants to play for their country no matter what level.

            Just what I was thinking
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

his desire may be increased but his ability and performances aint exactly crying out for a national call up.... play him as a striker or get rid of him i say.

So let me get this straight if there was no world cup/euro championship coming ........then he wouldn't have bothered to up his game!Well clearly he values his national place over his club

Christ, it's not as if NOTHING they print is ever true...there's quotes from babel, why would they make this up? Hardly sensationalistic stuff.

Interview was played on Radio City on Tuesday night.

Definately came across as more interested in getting back in the national side.

FFS, people are never ****ing happy. I couldn't give a **** what motivates him to play well, as long as it does the job.

It is clear that being left out the national side has given him a boot up the backside and hopefully that is the wake up call needed to get Ryan back on track. Obviously you lot are veering towards the argument that says he will jack it in after the world cup, but maybe you should give him some slack and say that he now knows the level of performance he needs to hit to be considered good enough to earn a place in our team and that of the Dutch national squad.

Babel has said in every interview that I've seen him give that all he wants to do is play football. Problem is that in the past he has expected to turn up and that his ability would be good enough, and when this hasn't happened he has wanted the easy way out. Well as he is not going to get the easy option (loan move) his only option is to knuckle down and win a spot.

If this level of effort and performance wins him a starting berth i would hope that it will in future serve as a barometer to him. I've maintained the same stance for a long time with regards Babel. He does have the ability but he needs to show more application. He's now starting to do that.
                              Forwards.......
