I'd say there is next to no doubt that he didn't have that money, or he'd have spent it. And if he did have the opportunity to spend it it's a good ****ing job he didn't or we'd have been selling another big name last summer. Alonso's sale and the money Pompey owed us for Crouch is what paid for this summer's recruits. The Keane money went up in smoke.
The Keane money did not go up in smoke. It has been spent somewhere. You can guarantee that without selling him we would not have had Aquilani, instead we would have sold Alonso and bought nobody except someone **** in the £5m bracket. Rafa was right to sell Keane.

He must have been had over by the Yanks, that's the only thing I can think of. We were in for Carlos Tevez at one point FFS. All I know is that we had bought Johnson, then sold Leto, Arbeloa and Alonso for big money and could then only afford to bring in Aquilani and a cut price CB. That's the money that's gone missing.

Purslow mentioned players signing new deals, but thye had all been signed along with Johnson before the sale of Arbeloa and Alonso - for whom we recieved all the money up front. We then made a down payment of about £5m on Aquilani and bought Kyrgiakos. Where has the rest of the Arby/Alonso money gone?
    Forwards.......

I think we agree in a roundabout way, maybe just not the specifics.

There was a lot of CASH gone in my opinion.

Keane £16m (Basically, we only paid a small amount for him last summer and had most of the rest written off)
          Alonso £35m
          Arbeloa £3.5m
          Leto £3m

          Aquilani £5m up front
Johnson £9m + Crouch debt written off
          Kyrgiakos £2m

So that's about £40m in cash that went missing, note that I'm not looking at "net spend", I'm just thinking about the actual cash that went in and out of our 'bank account' during the summer and could have been diverted elsewhere on a short term notice (say, debt repayment)

Now if you also add the guaranteed CL and PL money that was coming in, you could easily reach the £60m that went missing AND pay for the increased wage bill as a result of sorting out new contracts.

it was crystal clear that our season relied on gerrard and torres being fit for probably 30 - 35 games of the prem season.

Based on evidence from last season that was always going to be very optimistic and unfortunately after 11 games or so its become apparent that it was wishful thinking.

Our premier league hopes are over. All we can hope for is a top 4 finish and to somehow progress in the champions league to the knock out stages to give rafa another 10m or so in january.

Its not impossible because he won the CL in 2005 with a worse team than we have now so fingers crossed.

We won't get any money for transfers in January, in my opinion, unless we sell.

I'm hopefull since we signed a big bucks shirt deal. But it would be hugely reliant on us making the CL knockout stages. This month needs to be one where we get back on track - Hence my sig.........

I agree. I saw the reasons he was sent out on loan and more or less agreed with it. But the other back ups haven't cut it so I would bring him back in an instance.

I was never expecting both to stay fit all season, but after last year I had at least hoped that their injuries would come at separate times, never mind during the same ****ing International break.

I'm almost certain the budget we had at the start of the summer was significantly more than the budget we ended up with come the end of the summer. We were quick off the mark in signing Johnson and were then sniffing around strikers and wide players (constant rumours of Tevez and Silva amongst others). At this point publicly at least we were refusing to admit we'd sell Alonso, even if we knew privately Alonso was on his way, the club knew we would need to replace him which would take a large chunk of his fee, so it doesn't make sense to be looking at major signings in other areas if we had no money!

The fact that our net spend per season under H&G is less than our net spend in the previous 3 seasons under Moores is very disturbing given increases in TV revenue and merchandising, it may have been acceptable if we were building a new stadium but nothing is happening there either!
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
