Reserves boss John McMahon today warned his young guns to be on their toes in case a first-team call comes their way.
Nathan Eccleston became the third teenager this season to make a senior bow when he came on against Arsenal last week, following in the footsteps of Daniel Ayala and Martin Kelly.
And with a large number of injuries affecting his squad, Rafa Benitez may yet call upon more novices in the coming weeks.
"The young lads can see that there is a chance of development for them," McMahon told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"The youngsters are doing okay, they're progressing quite nicely. They've got in through injuries, but it's up to them to take chances - that's what it's about.
"Sometimes a player gets one chance and takes it, sometimes they get five or six and don't. It's up to them to grasp it with both hands if they get a chance."
The second string travel to Widnes tonight for the first mini-derby of the season, a game you can watch exclusively live online with an e-Season Ticket.
McMahon is relishing the prospect of coming up against his former club, but insists his league leaders will not change their usual approach against Everton.
He said: "Because it's Everton v Liverpool there's always a bit of extra spice to the game but we'll go about it like we go about any other game. We want to be solid, play good football and do things right.
"We should be competitive in every game, not just because it's Everton. We need to be closing down, talking, making challenges and working. We'll be looking for all these little bits from the lads."
McMahon has a depleted squad at his disposal due to injuries (Gerardo Bruna), internationals (Daniel Pacheco and Christopher Buchtmann) and Champions League call-ups.
"We know we won't be able to field anywhere near as strong a side as we have done in the past, so it might be an opportunity for some of our even younger lads," said McMahon.
"These lads or some of the lads who haven't played as much need to step in and take their opportunity."
