Gerrard: I was 'devastated' when Alonso left Liverpool

    LINK
Steven Gerrard was "devastated" when Xabi Alonso left Liverpool and admits the Reds have missed the Spaniard.

Liverpool captain Gerrard, who is currently injured and misses tonight's Champions League clash with Lyon, forged a good understanding with Alonso in midfield.

Alonso moved on to Real Madrid in the summer, since when Liverpool have struggled for form in the Premier League and Champions League.

It was a move which hit Gerrard hard.

"Devastated, yeah. Devastated. But there was nothing I could do about it," he told FourFourTwo magazine.

"Xabi said a long time ago that he wanted another chapter in his career and finally he got it and his team-mates and the coaches couldn't stand in his way. We just have to say thanks and move forward without him."

Liverpool recouped around £30million for 27-year-old Alonso, and spent most of that on bringing replacement Alberto Aquilani to Anfield from Roma.

Aquilani missed the first two months of the season due to injury and Liverpool have already lost seven matches.

Gerrard knew it would take Liverpool time to adapt to life without Alonso, who in a playmaker role had a vital duty in Rafael Benitez's team.

Gerrard said: "It's always going to be different when you lose one of the best players in the world - and people are finally realising that's what he is, on the back of his form for Real Madrid and the difference in us from last year.

"We've got other midfielders here doing a good job but it will take a while before Alonso's out of our system because he was such a top player."

I think the last comment is the most interesting - I wonder whether part of the problem is that some of our players haven't really accepted the change in style and what it means for them yet. Gerrard would be one of the worst in that regard from my point of view although for large parts of the first few games Kuyt, Benayoun and Riera weren't far behind.

Sounds as though nothing would have kept Xabi here, regardless of the stick Rafa keeps getting for "LETTING HIM GO"...."PUSHING HIM OUT" or whatever daft phrase that's been spun to make it his fault.

Alonso was happy before Rafa tried to offload him for Barry. That season he did his best to change the managers mind. Second season he was still trying to sell him. Why the hell should he stay? Worst bit of man management benitez has ever done. My absolute most favourite player too.

He was playing, he was apparently HAPPY, so he COULD have stayed if he REALLY wanted to, why CHOOSE to go because of one argument with the manager, ffs if every player that had a fall out with the manager left the clubs it would be a right merry go round.

Did he tell you personally he was happy? Or did you make out 2+2 for yourself based on what's been reported in the journos? You are making massive assumptions here.

                      Aye, sadly so.

Agree with Stevie though, he was a top player.
                      3rd place. Worst champions ever.

Mine too. So gutted when he left. Gerrard and Torres doesnt work the same without him behind them.

If i was Benitez i would have given him everything and anything to get him to stay. You cant afford to sell one of the best players in the world when your squad is pretty thin on quality.

Even the scum look pretty poor without Ronaldo, but their squad is better than ours so it doesnt hurt them as much.

He went from being quoted saying he was happy to being quoted he was pissed at benitez for not treating him well. Wake up seriously. If your boss was trying to offload you for almost 2 seasons, I doubt you'd feel too pleased either. Or is it another case of Rafa can do no wrong like usual.

Amazing really, I never thought Alonso leaving would have a bigger affect on us than Ronaldo's leaving would have on Manu, yet they're having their best start for a while I think. They have looked quite poor though and have been so lucky this season. Last nights goal by Valencia summed them up this season.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

Ok whatever you want to believe. I'll take Rafa over Alonso (or any other player) if you ask me. He's bigger than them.
