Can someone confirm or deny this ?

EXCLUSIVE - The REAL cost of Jan Kromkamp's Liverpool transfer. And he was NOT free...

It is widely believed that Liverpool acquired Jan Kromkamp for free as part of a player-exchange with Josemi. Every official source that has looked into Liverpool's transfer dealings has stated the same alleged fact. Well, after some research, that myth can now be debunked - Liverpool actually paid a surprisingly large transfer fee for the ineffective Krompkamp, the amount of which some may find surprising

According to Liverpool's annual report for 2005, Kromkamp cost the club £4.3m!

The deal for Josemi quite clearly seems to have been a completely separate transaction.

The official Liverpool FC site states the following about Kromkamp:

Dutch international Jan Kromkamp became Rafael Benitez's first major signing of 2006. He arrived at Anfield from Villarreal in a swap deal that involved Josemi moving in the opposite direction.

The implication here is that Kromkamp did not cost the club any money. Based on the evidence above, this is quite categorically untrue.

So - £4.3m for a player who made a grand total of 18 appearances and was shipped out after 7 months. Excluding the player's salary, Krompkamp cost Liverpool £241,000 per appearance.

    Was this money well-spent?

No - In my view, it was a complete and utter waste of £4.3m of Liverpool FC's money.

I highlight this issue to illustrate that not everything is as black and white as the media or fans make out when it comes to transfers.

I find it disturbing that every media outlet and every official source (including all newspapers; the BBC and every Liverpool FC site) failed to conduct even rudimentary research into the true cost of this transfer.

This is why the majority of Liverpool FC transfer breakdowns currently available on the internet are woefully inaccurate.

Figures like this will also have an impact on the club's net spend over the last 5 years, something that seems to be quite a hot topic at the moment. The question is, how many other inaccurate transfer fees are floating around in cyberspace?

    £4.3m for Krompkamp?

Surely one of the most financially irresponsible transfer in Liverpool FC's recent history?

But how much did we get for Josemi? If it was 4.3 million then all of that is bollocks. You would have thought the author would have this figure if they had the Krompkamp one, but they chose not to mention it, for some reason.

How much did we get for Josemi and how much did we get for Kronkamp.

But he's right that the transfer breakdowns are never right. Sometimes players want loyalty bonuses paid off before leaving, whilst agents also get their cut. Nothing is transparent.

What I will say is that in the past Rafa has been backed well in comparison to most clubs, and in return has finished where he should do in the league. My only gripe was that after finishing 2nd in the league the owners suddenly decide this is the time to limit spending. You can imagine what that did for confidence when are players knew that dross such as Voronin was returning as we had no money for even a half decent striker.
                Forwards.......

If it's in the official annual report for 2005 why has it taken 4 years for someone to make up some **** stiring piece about it?

the 4m or so could be the difference between buying someone like stuart downing or david silva.

does it matter ? - why dont you decide.

This guy seems like a real tool. I read some of his arguing in the discussion under the article and he seems to think that since Josemi wasn't a good player for us it's impossible that he went for 4,3 million.

The fact that we traded players kromkamp for Josemi we could have payed 10 million for kromkamp as long as we got the same amount for Josemi.

The fact that Josemi was highly rated in Spain might be a reason that 4,3 million seemed like a resonable figure for Villareal, this also meant that you could argue that Kromkamp and Josemi was sold for profit, on the other hand for Liverpool this would mean that the Kromkamp sale was a big loss. Anyway unless we can get the figures for the transfers of Baros, Diouf and Josemi separately we can't come to any conclusion from this.

He said in the comments he's getting hold of villereal's accounts...why didn't he just wait until then to see what josemi went for before writing this drivel?
