Benitez warns Capello to rest Gerrard

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has warned England coach Fabio Capello that playing Steven Gerrard in Saturday's friendly against Brazil is an unnecessary risk.

Gerrard, who could feature in the Reds' clash against Birmingham on Monday, has been sidelined with a groin injury which he aggravated while playing for England against Ukraine last month.

Benitez is privately frustrated that England didn't send Gerrard home immediately after he suffered the problem and he hopes Capello will use common sense and leave the midfielder out of his squad for the meaningless game in Doha because he is still not 100 percent fit.

"I don't see the point of taking a player who has not trained with the team for 15 days," Benitez said in the News of the World.

"If he plays on Monday it will be because we have pushed and pushed him,
but you cannot tell me when he has not trained with us for 15 days that he is fit.

"He can be available maybe if everything is okay but he is not match fit. So to play friendlies with him when England have already qualified, I would be really surprised.

"I will be really surprised to see my players playing friendlies when they are not fit for my team.

"There has been no agreement but is just common sense. Common sense is just something you have to use.

"I am sure that they understand. I hope common sense will prevail. Our doctor is in contact with England doctors so they know the situation."

I went Gerrard to stay on Merseyside, but if he plays on Monday and I can see why Capello would at least take him as part of the squad to be involved in training. The success of Liverpool is none of his business.

Same applies to Torres, though I'm sure Rafa has a better relationship with the Spanish lot. For these reasons I'd be happy to see Gerrard and maybe even Torres left out the squad for Birmingham.

With the game being at Anfield I think we will ahve enough in our locker to beat them without our top 2, what with all the other players coming back into fitness.
    Forwards.......

I guess this means Gerrard plays. We may actually have a fully fit squad!

            Hopefully Capello has taken notice

Good common sense has prevailed, maybe Capello is thinking of not having Gerrard in his world cup squad if he doesn't have surgery now but has to have it at end of the season.

I'd say that may well be playing on Stevie's mind too.And Torres for that matter but then they both had a part to play in not telling their respective managers that they were injured and needed to go back to their clubs rather than hang around getting ready for meaningless matches they could never play in,Torres in particular since he stayed with the squad and didn't return till after the second game

It is bound to play on both players minds as it is the world cup and it could be Gerrard's last one. Yeah they both should of wanted to back to club to get the treatment they need

The trouble is that no one (including us) have been doing the best for the players injuries. We have (somewhat out of necessity) rushed both players back almost constantly in the last two seasons. It's difficult for us to demand that international managers don't play someone who we force to play through the pain week in, week out.

Except we pay their wages and like you say, we ask them to play out of necessity - not because there's a money spinning friendly thousands of miles away.

not to mention the fact they both got injured under national team care ,one of them continually so

                            All valid points.

I think it is fairly obvious on this occasion that Gerrard has been rested due to this only being a friendly, so Capello must take the credit for that.

He would have been perfectly entitled to call Gerrard up to the squad considering Gerrard is close to playing v Brum.
