      YES!

Gareth Barry is a brilliant player. ANd a good PL player. Aquilani could turn out to be a Veron. Garreth Barry was English, negating the need for an English right back, saving cash there.

Gareth Barry is closer in style to ALonso, and will fit in far better tactically in comparison to last season, unless you are prepared to dislodge Gerrard.

£5m for a striker is £5m more than we spent on Voronin. Personally I would have demanded Van Nsitelroy from Madrid as part of the Alonso deal (providing symmetry for Owen).

I guess it depends how flexible Rafa is with his one up front formation.

Also, Aquilani has spent most of his career injured, perhaps we got him cheap, I dunno. But his goal scoring record from midfield isnt great.

In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

The defence is quite different. Last season our back four was:

            Arbeloa Carragher Agger Aurelio

            this season (it's mostly been)

            Johnson Carragher Skrtel Insua

But injuries to Johnson and Skrtel have seen other players come in, Agger has missed most of this season. So theres alot of difference

Skrtel played a few more games than Agger last season, but yes fair enough.

Barry and Alonso are completely different types of player. Just because Barry plays in the Premiership it doesn't mean he would settle into our team.

I don't think we bought Johnson because he was English we bought him because we needed a right back. I don't understand why so many people are saying we shouldn't have signed Johnson (or at least that we should have spent the money elsewhere) when he's probably been our best player so far this season, and the same people were complaining a while back about us not getting Alves

It's debatable as to who is the first choice centre back partner for Carragher, personally I would say Agger as he seems to play when fit, he was first choice for the majority of the second half of the season but is injured alot this season meaning Skrtel plays, again due to injuries.

Skrtel and Lucas have a lot of quality, but when the chips are down mentally they seem to crumble, Kuyt and Babel are not much better. Compare us to the Chavs who seem to ooze leaders from every corner and to my mind thats where a huge problem lies.

We lack players with the drive of Alonso and Sami, I think characters like that (and with their experience) are the difference between going behind and coming back to win (like we did alot last season) and struggling like we are at the moment.

but he knows what the premiership is all about so there's more of a chance that he would've been a success with us than taking in a player with no EPL experience at all.

and there in lies a problem, I don't think either knows where they stand in the pecking order and imo, these two positions should be very consistent.

I would say it's Agger as he seems to play when he's fit, but he misses alot of games through injury hence the chopping and changing. I think the Carragher Agger partnership works the best of anything we have, but it keeps being split up for various reasons. What we need is consistency in our back line and our defensive record will improve!

Really that just means they can handle the physical nature of the game, it doesn't mean they'll do well in the system. The Keane transfer was an example of that

yes, but thats one less thing to worry about, many players have come here and not settled, with British players there's no worry about it.

I've no doubt that Barry would've settled in though.

With Keane, well, its hard to settle into a system from the bench, however £20m was madness.

I'm not so sure he would have provided what we need
