As you can see i dont post much but here goes. Tonights game was about the result, which we got, it was out of our hands if we got through and having watched the lyon game for large periods they did pretty well 2nd half and we can have no complaints with there performance.

So far the season has been ****, both in the league and in europe, but you have to look at the injuries and the fact we lost 3 key players, for different reasons, in the summer who had been in the team and knew the system for a long time

The back four has been chopped and changed regularly this season, last year the right back was a player who could play all 4 positions across the defence bit didnt bring much going forward although Kuyt had a good season with assists and goals. Now we have a RB who offers so much more going forward but is adjusting to a different defensive system and has Kuyt infront of him nothing like last years form

I dont think that Insua would have had so much 1st team football if Aurelio and Riera had been fit, although Riera is looking more like the Man City player than the Liverpool player of last season. Insua will be a decent full back but he has been pitched in a back four changing on a regular basis and this cant be easy for a young player. This is where the experience of Hypia would have been such a help to both him and johnson.

Last season Alonso ran the formation from deep, moving the ball quickly and expansivly when required, the current midfield cannot do that and Gerrard has been dropping deeper to get the ball which in the 4231 formation leaves us short of options. Alonso wanted to leave though!

I personally cant blame Benitez for this, yes we are Liverpool, yes we have 18 League Titles and 5 European Cups but we have overachieved, for the last 5-6 years, on limited resources, when Chelsea and now City can spend 200m in a transfer window and we have spent an average of 16m per year, even Tottenham have outspent us with a much smaller revenue stream.

We need to get everyone fit and firing, pull together and show how we can perform, like against utd, like we did at the back end of last year.
