    A Change of Position?

I'm sitting here at work looking out of the window pondering many things such as if coal used to be trees years ago and its miles beneath the ground, does that mean the planet has grown upwards & is getting higher? If we're taking oil from the ground, what fills the void? Does it matter? Whats the point of christmas tins of biscuits? all muddled together, you get a chocolate digestive but it doesn't taste like a real one, rubbish.

What if we played Glenn Johnson as a right winger? But he's a fullback, yes he is but he's not a stick of rock, you cut him open he doesn't say right back inside. He's easily been our best attacking player this season. He goes past people so easily. He's a joy to watch. He's wasted at full back. We need to give him more of the ball.

Ray Kennedy was a striker when we signed him and was converted to a midfielder and is one of our best ever players.

It can be done. We have Kelly, Degen & Darby who could play full back. I honestly think Johnson on the right wing would give us so much more. He has pace, ability, eye for goal, can dribble and cross. Torres would love it.

Sometimes you have what you need right in front of you. Its about making the best of what you do have and not worrying about what you can't have. We don't have an arab with deep pockets, but we do have a very special talent on our books.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing it tried at some point. Kelly showed enough in his one outing so far against Lyon to give me confidence in him to play at RB.

the only way i'd let johnson move to right mid / wing is if we can get and keep degen fit. kelly and darby at this point in time are not good enough.

I think the current 4231 only works if both torres and gerrard are playing. If either one is missing it doesnt work.

Additionally, if aquilani doesnt play then we struggle to get the quick balls into gerrards feet in the hole.

I would like to see a formation change to where we play 3 midfield players to maybe something like this:

        ..........................................reina... ....................................

        johnson...............carra...................agge r.....................insua.....

        .........gerrard......................masher...... .............aurelio.............

        ......................aquilani.................... ...benayoun......................

        ..........................................torres.. ....................................

aurelio can work the left flank with insua and johnson can form a very potent partnership with gerrard on the right.

When aurelio goes it might be easier to find a left sided midfield player as opposed to paying astronomical amounts for genuine wingers like silva.

two holding midfielders is too defensive and it upsets the attacking force of the side.

You've decided that off the back of his one performance, which was generally thought to be a good one?

thanks....the thread is about Johnson becoming our John Barnes albeit right sided, the rest is for other threads.

If we can stick Kuyt out there then why not someone who actually has some wingers attributes?

Don't see where Kuyt would fit in then though, so that probably means that it will not happen.

IMO though, Benny has been our best attacker when he's played. He just takes the piss out of people, goes past them with the ball stuck to his boot.

i am in agreement that his performance against lyon was a good one but i thought had it been against the likes of a lennon, arshavin, cole, valencia etc.... then he might have been shown up. he prob will end up a good player but for now i think to have johnson at right wing would need someone like degen to provide defensive cover and not kelly or darby who haven't shown they are ready yet to me.

Kuyt can be thrown in the bin for all I care.

Would you give Johnson at least the odd game at right wing?

actually, the best way IMO to fit johnson into a right wing role would be to switch to a 3-5-2 formation and play him at wing back.

Thats my point though, Rafa will always play Kuyt, he's almost undroppable in his eyes. I'd have Johnson there in a shot ahead of Kuyt, but who would step in at RB?

With Mascher in the middle tidying up that could work and be quite effective. I'd be concerned in defence though (with the pace of the premiership)
