New Liverpool signing Milan Jovanovic has revealed how he turned down a move to Real Madrid before agreeing his Anfield switch.

The Serbia forward is expected to make his competitive debut for the Reds in Thursday night's Europa League qualifier against FK Rabotnicki.

The 29-year-old, who can play on the left wing or as a striker, was lured to Merseyside by former boss Rafa Benitez on a free transfer.

And former Standard Liege attacker Jovanovic revealed how he had previously rejected a move to the Bernabeu after he was not guaranteed regular first-team football.

    Very happy

"I think 99 per cent of people I spoke to told me they did not understand why I said no to Real," said Jovanovic, who scored Serbia's winner against Germany in the group stage of the World Cup.
"But maybe I am special. I thought if I went it would be as an ordinary player, but that, if I stayed, I would be where I felt good, where I was a star in Belgium.

"It is only a small league but Standard Liege won two titles and two Super Cups while I was there and I won two personal awards, one from coaches and players and the second from journalists. So I was very happy.

"Real offered me just a one-year deal with an option for two years. I said four, they said no and so I turned them down. Maybe they are the biggest club in the world, but I always knew that other big clubs would come.

"I will never go somewhere where I only play a small part. Why? It is better to be happy somewhere. Now I only want to look forward and play for Liverpool."
He seems like a reasonble guy, not getting his head turned by Real as so many players normally do. Good for you Mile

Yup at least he's not one of those players that would accept sitting on the bench just because it was Real madrid, well done lad hope he is a star here.

They offered him a one year contract FFS, even I would probably knock that back.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

With an option for a further two.

Being the operative word. Injury, change of manager, better players could all have stood in his way of renewing the contract and was completely out of his hands.

I did read that bit by the way, and personally I have never heard of a one year contract in football, so back to my original point, if I thought I was a half decent footballer, I’d be insulted by that offer, regardless of who it came from.

Fair point, kind of scabby contract offer alright. Hopefully he can be a success here.

The Real/Jovanovic stuff has been out there for a while, there's nothing revelatory about it.

Milan Jovanovic wants to repay the faith shown by manager Roy Hodgson following his arrival at Liverpool.

The Serbia international moved to Anfield after playing in this summer's World Cup, having previously made an initial agreement with former Reds boss Rafa Benitez.

Ex-Standard Liege forward Jovanovic is grateful that Hodgson decided to conclude the deal and he wants to impress his new manager.

He told Liverpool's official website: "My main thing now is to show Roy Hodgson that the club hasn't made an error in bringing me here.

"The coach is fantastic. He speaks very openly with us and tries to put across his ideas clearly.

"I hope that I will learn more and more. I accept the coach's words and now it is up to me to show him I really can do everything he asks me to do.

"I have only been here a short time, but I want to show all my qualities.

"I know that physically the Premier League is a demanding league, but when I thought about this characteristic, I thought, 'this is me'.

"I think I can do everything I need to play at the top level here. It is a long season and if you count games with the national team as well, you can be looking at 60 or 70 games, but I feel okay and of course I am really looking forward to it.

"I couldn't have asked for more from the other players in making me feel welcome. They have been very kind and I feel very close to the group in a short space of time.

"I am 29 and feel I am at my best. I feel this is my best time and I am with the best team."

                    Bit poo isn't he.

Seems to need to concentrate hard to keep the ball under control which means he isn't really aware of whats around him. Bit of a headless chicken, although he can beat a man.

Perhaps he's an out wide version of Titi Camara without the shooting boots?

Yeah he is, I said the same in the mod lounge a few weeks back, but he seemed to be popular so didn't mention it here for a fear of backlash from his cult following

He looks like he will always give 100% and for that he will be popular, but he lacks that bit of class we need, Ryan babel should be looking at himself and then jovanovic and thinking that if he gets his head down works hard and takes any chances that it won't be long before he is in the first team

I think he's come in for unfair abuse so far tbh.

He's been put in the deep end, early on and in difficult circumstances, he should be cut a bit of slack.

Thought he was decent yesterday, without being spectacular. Unfortunately though, i think that sums him up.

To me that is the biggest problem and no time in the world will address that issue. He cannot pass on the fly and by the time he does it is way too late (90% of his passes are going backwards and that drives me crazy). He has no confidence in his shooting skills so he is not a goal threat, he cannot play wide so he cannot feed Nando in the box etc. Very poor showing on his part and I don't think it will get much better.

I can't quite understand his positioning. Obviously he spends a lot of time in the centre of the field. Do you think its down to his natural tendency to be playing through the middle, the lack of ability from Poulsen/Lucas or because he is simply trying to link up our attack. It could also be an odd strategical plan because Torres seems to regularly find himself wide left when Jova comes midfield or is that simply Torres covering Jova....
