I'm not trying to play Devil's advocate to cause a stir, but is he capable of playing the role?

The man would get in any side in the world, unquestionnably, but as a CM in a midfield 2? I'm not sure.

Admittedly i haven't watched him half as much as you guys and i can't remember the last time i saw him in a 2, but he seemed to be a shadow of the player he is further forward. Lacking ideas and generally lacking any control he has on a game when playing off a striker.

Benitez has been right all this time hasn't he?

actually he just played a terrible game. he was in a midfield 2 at points over the past few games and looked ok.

but i think he's been a shadow of himself in general, in whatever position he happens to be playing.

Gerrard is perfectly capable of playing that role on normal form. After all thats where he made his name as one of the best in the world.

However right now he is not fit and having a bad season. I said at the start of the year that he's turning 30 this season and we have seen the best of him. He's still a good player but his form is woeful at the moment regardless of what position he plays

I hope he's carrying an slight injury because if he isn't then something is seriously up!

The only position I've ever seen him play where he looked out of place was out and out striker. He can play pretty much anywhere else. He's definitely carrying an injury, but I do worry that perhaps we have seen the best of him in his current guise, depending on how long it takes for him to recover.

But lets be honest, he won;t be allowed to have an operation this season.

He had a mare today, didn't do the basic rights and his work-rate was a complete joke.
