I think the club would consider an offer of anything upwards of £50M.

Are his injuries a major cause for concern? The club or owners may feel it is.

I wouldn't sell him but every player has a price and when you factor in his injury record of late its not £100m.

Aren't his injuries this season based on the fact he isn't having an operation to fix them? If we were prepared to lose him for a period of time while he had the operation, would he then be injury-prone?

Torres: I want to break more records at Liverpool

Fernando Torres may be an Anfield record breaker, but he has promised Liverpool fans he hasn't finished yet.

The Spanish striker eclipsed one of the most elite goal-scoring groups in football history, when he became the fastest-ever Reds player to reach 50 goals for the club.

That puts him ahead of legends like Ian Rush, Roger Hunt, Robbie Fowler, Kevin Keegan and Billy Liddell, and elevates him immediately into the ranks of the all-time greats in world football.

Torres is a keen student of Anfield history, and knows all about the great names that have graced the famous old stadium throughout the club's trophy-laden history.

One of his first actions when arriving in England was to watch every video about Liverpool he could find in the club shop, and he has spoken to people like Rush and Kenny Dalglish to get a feel of what it means to play for the club.

The Spain superstar knows, then, what a remarkable achievement his record is. And while he is rightly proud of topping such an illustrious group, he knows that 50 goals is not enough to be considered as the equal of the men who have scored so many times.

Speaking this week, Torres revealed the burning desire he has to keep breaking records to ensure that his name can be spoken in the same breath as the likes of Rush, Fowler and Hunt.

"I am proud, very proud. To break a record like that is unbelievable for me because Liverpool is not a small club - it's one of the biggest and most historic in the world," he explained.

"All the players who've played here are top players who've scored a lot of goals. They've got massive records. I am ahead of them on this one now and that, for me, is one of the most important things I've done in my career.

"I want to keep breaking these records so I am always in the history books of one of the greatest clubs in the world - and in the memories of the people.

"I want to be remembered the same way the people remember those great players, and most of all, I want to make the people happy."

Torres still has a long way to go to Rush, who is Liverpool's all-time goal-scorer on 346 goals and widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers to have ever graced English football.

The Spanish international acknowledges that, and is happy to concede for the time being that he can yet be rated alongside such Anfield legends, unless he continues to score goals for the club for many years to come.

But that is his aim. He revealed that his first priority is to remain fit this season, and provide the goals that will help Liverpool achieve their aim of finishing in the top four and lifting a trophy.

And then he wants to prove that he can keep the same momentum in seasons to come, to one day be ranked alongside the best there have been at Anfield.

"I am just doing my job and I want to keep breaking records and keep making people happy," Torres added.

"I want as many as we need to get fourth spot and win the FA Cup, because that is the aim of the whole team now, to ensure we can be successful this season.

"I never say a number of goals but always like to score more than the season before. Hopefully that won't be difficult because I only got 17 last season after the injuries." For Torres to one day surpass Rush he will have to conquer the injury problems that have blighted him for almost 12 months now at Anfield.

He revealed yesterday that he is training for up to five hours a day longer than his team-mates to overcome the abdominal problems he has suffered this season.

And the forward is hoping that a regime devised with the club's physios will help him stay fit...and creep closer to the othere records that Rush and Fowler hold at Anfield.

"The injuries are the most frustrating thing for me, because it is hard to watch my team-mates in difficult situations without me," he said.

"It's most frustrating of all because I've never been injured before - not at Atletico and only one small one during my first season here at Anfield.

"The last two seasons have been the first time I've had consecutive injuries.

"I'm not old but I'm not that young, so I need to look after myself with extra work. I know I have to work harder in order to play three games a week until the end of my career. I need to work harder than before.

"But the physios have helped me a lot. They are the professionals and know what they have to do. It's thanks to them that I can keep playing. I can play every game now.

"Without their help maybe I'd not be playing, so thanks to all the physios and medical staff.
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
          Mine angry and defrauded young?

It's kind of funny in a way.

The defining thing in our future may not be the manager, the team, the owners, but the fact that Torres happened to be a massive fan and picked us.

Everytime I see an interview with him I realise how lucky we are.

Bollix before him it was Gerrard before him it was Owen after him it will be someone else ..

We are though ...lucky to have the most talented striker on the planet and the most decent pro it seems also .. A dream player for any club, he is priceless in ever way

I dont idolize footballers or celebrity's but i put Torres in the same cathergory as Federer, GSP, Ali .. true champions truly worldclass in every dept. Love the guy, seems like a bang up guy and the kind who would always have your back unlike most of the assbags who play professional football these days

Different but. They were brought up by the academy. Hopefully we will produce another one soon but. As much as I'm not a local myself it still does seem a bit mores special when it's a local lad up there. It somehow feels proper and traditional.

Torres on the other hand transferred in purely out of love for the club.

But yeah, maybe I am getting carried away. But we are definitely extremely lucky.

Basically saying what we all know..

Rafael Benítez has admitted that he cannot guarantee he will be able to keep Fernando Torres at Liverpool if the club fail to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.

The Liverpool manager said earlier in the campaign that Torres was "not for sale at any price"

but has now acknowledged that key players could leave if he does not secure qualification for the Champions League.

"Finishing in the top four is the key to keeping everyone together," Benítez said.

Asked whether Liverpool, who have significant debts, would be able to resist a £100m offer from Manchester City for Torres, he said:

"At the moment we have to do the best for the club – and the best for the club is trying to improve the squad."

But when pressed for a second time on the matter, he replied:

"We would have conversations if we had to decide about this."

That appeared to be a reference to talks with the co-owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who loaded on to the club the £174m they borrowed for their takeover.

A failure to qualify for the Champions League would have a damaging impact on Liverpool's finances.

If we have to sell Torres so those ****ing yanks cunts can line their pockets, then i will never watch another match whilst they are running the club.

It may not be a case of having to sell but more a case of Torres wanting to leave for Champs League..

                          I hope not..

Hes not that kind of character imo. Having said that if we didn't qualify and he didn't see the club looking to rectify the situation that could be a different ball game altogether.

i dont think torres would ever hand in a transfer request - its going to be the case where he is pushed out of the club.

If we dont finish top 4 both him and gerrard will probably be sold. Masher will hand in a transfer request and we will bring in kenwyne jones, james beattie and lee catermole as replacements.
