McCarthy - How I broke the ice with Rafa

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has revealed how he broke the ice with Rafa Benitez after defeat at Liverpool.

Benitez had been critical of McCarthy over his shadow selection for Wolves' loss at Manchester United last month.

"I’ll tell you what happened at Anfield," McCarthy told the Daily Mail. "We got beat and had Stephen Ward sent off and in the press conference I was asked if I disrespected Liverpool by putting my first-team out, as if that makes any sense.

"So I went from there to Rafa’s room because I’ll go to see anybody after the game, if they’ll have me. I walked in and said, “First of all, Rafa, the referee was perfect today, everything he did was perfect,” because he had made that little speech after Liverpool lost at Portsmouth.

"So he started laughing and then I said, 'And about that other business, I don’t know if you’ve come across it, but we have a little phrase we use in English football and it goes like this: **** ‘em.' And I opened a bottle of beer and we got on fine. I know the gaffers normally like to sup vino but I prefer ale, I'm a ****in' northerner. I like Stones or John Smiths. I offered Rafa a can of Stones but he politely declined. Say anything? Of course he didn’t say anything. He just laughed. What is he going to say anyway? He has been around. He knows the situation.

"I disrespected the Premier League? No, I didn’t. I paid it the biggest compliment I could because I made a decision driven completely by one thing: the desire to stay in it. That is the only issue for me, just as it is the only issue for about another 10 managers. And every one of them knows why I did what I did."

I still have no time for McCarthy. If he was any good, he's be at a decent club by now.
              Oh I don't know.

I think he is limited but he did excellent jobs for both Sunderland and Wolves in the Championship - raising their teams standard, lowering their age and not spending a lot. His problem has always been the step up, He has definitely shown he has learned a few things this time round in terms of the players he brought in and tactics.

I understand why he did what he did but to be honest it was silly this season given United have't looked great all season. Both Burnley and Birmingham have shown what can happen when you take the fight to United so I would hope he feels a bit stupid about it now and takes the fight to them at Molineux

I don't think he will feel stupid as he got the three points against BUrnley he was after. I think he made a sound decision. That week Burnley had two games and got a lot of praise for playing well against Arsenal and then got easily beaten by Wolves - from that week Burnley got one point, Wolves three. None of the top teams look as invincible as they have in previous seasons so the argument for going for every game is on some levels strong but you can't look at games in isolation when judging the effects of resting players.

He's a ****house. The aim is to "stay up" and yet he's giving them 37 games rather than 38 games to do it in.

I would absolutely love to see them relegated on goal difference.

Guys a ****in ****. I have absolutely no respect for him after what he did, he can go about pretending to be mates with Rafa now but like he said himself Rafa never even replied to him

McCarthy is underrated imo. As someone said. has done well over the years despite limited budget. As to why he doesn't get a bigger job probably down to the fact he doesn't take any sh1t. Did very well with Ireland too until the rats after the WC 2002 exit started singing "There's only one Keano" or whatever when they played their next competitive game in Ireland - ungrateful scumbags!

history is showing mccarthy to be a decent bloke and a good manager and "keano" as a paranoid, ranting nutjob.
