Xabi Alonso reveals reason for leaving

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,195...851576,00.html

Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Liverpool's pursuit of Gareth Barry was the catalyst behind him leaving Anfield.

Alonso exited Liverpool last summer and joined Real Madrid in a deal worth around £30million.

Many Reds fans were unhappy to lose him, but Alonso admits his mind was made up 12 months earlier when Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez tried to sign Aston Villa's Barry.

The Barry deal failed to materialise, with the England international later joining Manchester City, but Alonso felt he was not wanted by Benitez from that point.

"The pursuit of Gareth Barry took some time for me to accept and, in all honesty, it changed the course of my future," Alonso told The People.

"I did get over it but it did take time for me to accept what had happened to me.

"Leaving Liverpool was one of the hardest decisions of my life, but after what happened with Barry I knew in my heart I had to tell Rafa that I wanted to go to Madrid when they came knocking at the door.

"I was still fairly young when I joined Liverpool and I had not only grown into the player I'd become there, but also the man I'd become."

Liverpool's form has dipped this season and many put this down to Alonso's departure - but he does not think that there is a major problem at Anfield.

"People talk about this Liverpool team but it is more or less the same one that was challenging for the title last season," he said.

"Liverpool have been very unfortunate with injuries this season, but they have started to put wins together again and I am sure they will secure a top-four place.

"When you have bad results it is not always easy to get back to winning ways, but they have managed to do that and now it is time for them to look upwards.

"They have a great squad and finishing in the top four is a must for them. I think it is something they will achieve.

"I would not offer advice to any of the players because they don't need me to tell them what to do, but I do offer them my friendship."

Alonso still has a special bond with Anfield and said:

"I still see and speak with all the Spanish boys at Liverpool, but I also speak with others there.

I am in regular contact with Stevie Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

I spent a lot of time at Liverpool and in those two I have made friends for life."

Alonso insists there is no bad blood between him and Benitez.

"There is no questioning that he is a good manager who can still bring success for Liverpool," he said.

"He doesn't operate the same way to a lot of other managers, but you can't deny that he is successful in what he does.

He keeps his distance emotionally - you are the player and he is the manager and that's the way he likes it. You have to accept that.

"I will always respect Rafa for what he has done in football but, more importantly,

I will always be massively grateful to him for the chance he gave me to join Liverpool.

"The club gave me so much and I made some great friends - and the Liverpool fans are beyond excellent.

"It was such a hard decision for me but I knew in my heart it was the right time to leave.

"It will always be a special place for me, and when I can I will always go back and watch the team and see my old friends."

oh great a manager who didnt have a supern season then cries off when we try and bring in someone to challenge his position.

hardly the fighting spirit we would want in a manager is it?

You just knew the barry thing was the reason he left. Lets face it if your employer wanted to bring someone in to replace you who is no where near your skillset you would be pissed too.

I'm still coming to terms with his departure.

Why would this be a threat to you though ? Surely you would bet on yourself to see off the competition, especially one with a lesser skill set.

Which is what i think Xabi would have done, if he really wanted to stay, actually it's the least i'd have expected from such a good pro, a fight.

My sentiments exactly, fight for your place or move on, Thanks for everything Alonso but dont keep laying the blame of your move away at the door of other's .Either you want to fight for the shirt or you want out, i can see you made YOUR choice

Was it not more that Alonso would've been sold if Barry came in?

It proberbly was but his performance last season would have made that very difficult for rafa so he should have stayed and show some fight IMO

You just knew him playing crap for a couple of years was the reason no-one would buy him and we had to go looking for someone who could keep hold of the ball. It's no credit to him at all that it took the threat of being sold for him to get out of cruise control. If we hadn't of gone after Barry he probably would have played crap again AND we wouldn't have got 30m. He's as much sinner as sinned against.

As far as my memory serves, he didn't play crap for a couple of seasons but this gets bandied about so often that it seems to becoming ingrained in peoples memories. The only time he really struggled was during the second half of the 2007-2008, after missing the first half of the season due to injury.

Even when he was at his poorest (by his own standards) I don't think he played any worse than Gerrard has this season.

Different people use different words to describe the "lull". Fact is he under-performed. Last season proved that. Spectacularly.

In my book Gerrard has also been crap this season, just for calibration purposes.

He played more than 1 good season. He was also injured alot. When he wasnt injured he was excellent. But we seem to give Gerrard plenty of room to screw up and still be allowed to continue his poor form. Even when Alonso wasnt scoring goals or assisting much during his couple years of endless injuries, and lets face it everyone seems to get injured MORE while at our club for some stupid reason, he was still in the middle doing great passes and excellent tackles. During his poor seasons he was heads and shoulders above Lucas and the like.

Way too much abuse for what was easily our best midfielder. At least he played like he WANTED to be at the club unlike a few other USELESS BAGGAGE we have, even though rafa was trying to shovle him out to sign some merc. If anyone deserves more respect in the team than is being given here it was Alonso.
