THE FA Youth Cup has provided some wonderful memories in recent seasons for Liverpool’s youth team players.
And the latest crop of youngsters have their first match of the New Year this evening looking to create some more at Leicester City (7pm kick-off).
With Saturday’s FA Premier Academy League Merseyside derby with Everton at Finch Farm called off due to the bad weather that has swept the country, and the Christmas break in fixtures, Rodolfo Borrell’s side have not played in a month, since a 1-1 draw with Academy League Group C leaders Blackburn Rovers.
The 2006 and 2007 cup winners continued their love affair with the Youth Cup with an excellent 2-0 third-round victory over Wolves at Anfield at the end of November.
That victory was very much inspired by attacker Tom Ince, who used the defeat in last year’s two-legged final by Arsenal as a spur to trying to go one better this season, and scored the opening goal of this campaign.
The son of former Liverpool and England captain Paul will be a key figure again against a Leicester side who beat them 3-0 earlier in the season.
Leicester’s Academy manager Jon Rudkin is expecting a different game to the last meeting.
He said: “Liverpool have been in the final for the past three seasons and won two of them so we know they will be difficult opposition.”
Liverpool will field a similar side to that which beat Wolves in the third round and if they can win they will be at home in the fifth round against either Hartlepool or Watford, who face each other tomorrow at Victoria Park should they overcome the Foxes.
The Reds will play their first Academy League match of 2010 when they travel to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday (kick-off 11am) – weather permitting.
