Hmmm. Having had some time to take stock since this afternoon, I think I can appreciate the viewpoint the likes of Pete, Shaggy and yourself have been expressing a bit more, and perhaps I was a bit harsh earlier.... but I still think that was an appallingly dire game of football. For a neutral watching that would have been like having teeth pulled slowly. You're right, Stoke isn't an easy place to go, and it was never going to be a "good" game, but I honestly thought we could have played for three times as long and still never looked like creating chances. Stoke were very poor, perhaps that was down to good defending on our part, but what struck me watching that was just how little a sense of our own footballing identity and style we are playing with these days. Yes the team showed a bit of grit and determination, but its a sad state of affairs really when that is considered an improvement.

Us struggling upfront without Gerrard, Torres, Benny etc isn't really that much of a surprise, but personally I didn't think 1 shot on target in the entire game was really good enough even without them. Stoke had 10 corners. We had none.

Lucas was indeed, once again, one of our better performers. Kyrgiakos had a very strong game in the air, and some of the other defenders played reasonably, abet against possibly the least subtle attack in the league. Degen and Aurelio (what's happened to him?) were very poor though, and upfront I just felt really sorry of Ngog, feeding off scraps doesn't even come close. The initial team selection I could live with, but i felt we missed a big opportunity to take the game by the scruff of the neck after we rather fortuitously scored, bold substitutions on our part could have killed the game off rather than allowing Stoke to regain the impetus and pressurise us the way the did in the closing stages - our defence has just been too brittle this season to get away with it, as they once again proved. I think that's what left me with a bad taste in my mouth, if we'd pushed on after we scored that would actually have become an excellent performance, instead our predictable capitulation in the final minutes lost us more points we simply cannot afford to do without.
i see exactly what you're saying and that feeling is in the back of my mind too i.e. what got us into this mess, aside from injuries, was still on display yesterday - caution, negativity, not killing a game that's there to be killed etc.

but our reality is different than that now. the way i look at it is this - if rafa had been sacked after reading and hiddinck or mourinho had been installed, that is more than likely exactly how we would have played and we'd probably be praising them for attempting in inject a new resilience into the team and very nearly doing it.

This picture from yesterday shows exactly why we conceded in the way we did at the end.
The half way line just in view and only Lucas to be seen.

Talk about defending deep and why is it we never have someone on the centre spot ready to counter.

Thats really is shocking. And it's always annoyed me too how we don't leave one pacy player up by the half way line. When was the last time we scored a goal on the counter attack?

Yesterday was never going to be pretty. Anyone who thinks we are suddenly going to play Real/United 4-1 demolition standard is kidding themselves.

We have been ****e and Reading was the lowest of the low. Finally the penny dropped with the players and they put a shift in. 3" off the post the other way and it couldve nestled and we wouldve got what we deserved or Insua couldve stepped a yard to his right and then offised wouldve been given. Thats how close we came to 3 points.

As for the performance, the players stepped up. Yes it wasnt pretty, it wasnt a good game but they grafted and with the same application from now on, results will come our way. It was a start yesterday, thats what it was, nothing more nothing less.

We all know where this team should be but we are not so no amont of moaning is gonna change that. Graft is whats required to change things and thats exactly what we got yesterday. A team that grafted. Same on wednesday and it will go our way. Reading will have hurt the team and yesterday, while it was a sickener, should be the boost we need.

That could also be said about so many decisions that we've benefitted from though. The big thing at the moment is that we are facing concerted pressure in the last ten mins of every game, and we never look like holding out. It doesn't matter if we score in the 1st of 60th minute, come 80mins we're under the cosh and looking frail.

Yeah we are but its happened that so many times now that the players have to react to it. Spurs on wednesday, that'll be their game plan. They'll sit off us and then only attack in the last 10 cos they know our confidence will be balls. But I think the belief that was showed yesterday for 89 mins has to rub off and if we can get more than a 1 goal lead before 80 mins, then the confidence will hold and thats the key to it.

Spurs plan will be to hold us and then attack at the death. If we go out with the right attitude we can get a cushioned lead and the spirit that was there yesterday will flow. The team and more importantly the fans, have to show this belief on wednesday.

The freekick we scored from yesterday was never a foul.

And Lucas was brought down for a pen and it wasnt given. Things level out.

But the penalty we never scored from that Lucas didn't get was.

edit. Ah bollocks The Glove has done it already.

I think Rafa is very very fortunate that we have two owners that cant even agree that the sky is blue as if we had an owner and board that was on the ball. I believe he would be gone by now as no top club in world football would except a run of 6 wins in 22 games. Plus it is not just the results that are bad it is everything to our game.

Ian St john summed it up perfectly to me. He said we have no style of play and just pass the ball sideways or hoof it up.

To be fair, if we had a Owner and board that were on the ball we wouldnt be in a mess in the first place.

I am not 100% sure. We would have more squad depth, but rafa isn't able to get the most from the players he has at the moment. If we had more backing, the expecations would be higher along with the budget.
