Late in the first half of yesterday's Merseyside derby, with Liverpool already locked into an attritional struggle after the sending-off of Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Jamie Carragher's shrieking voice punctured the Anfield air. Carragher didn't want Steven Gerrard to take a free-kick. "Stevie, Stevie, go forward," he screamed. Carragher wanted Javier Mascherano to take it so he addressed the captain of Argentina. "Mascherano, you take it."

It is hard to know what a team-mate of Carragher's must do to be on first-name terms with Liverpool's spiritual leader but Mascherano might have earned it at Anfield yesterday. He was one of a number of players who responded to the sending-off with immovable defiance.

It was all that was required to win this game but that is not to diminish the qualities Liverpool showed, even if this was a victory that didn't require Rafael Benitez's side to play much football. The visit to the Emirates on Wednesday will demand different qualities.

"It was a massive game for us and then to win the derby with 10 players at Anfield is very special," Benitez said later.

In the second half, Dirk Kuyt scored the goal that would ensure Liverpool rocked to another victory over Everton and moved within five points of Arsenal. Kuyt is another player who thrives on occasions when heart is preferred to technique.

"Games like these are the reason supporters love derby matches," said David Moyes, who, true to form, conceded that Everton were lucky to play for as long as they had with 11 players before Steven Pienaar was sent off in injury-time. Moyes conceded that Pienaar should have gone long before as Martin Atkinson's desire to be understanding of the traditions of the fixture allowed a thunderous game to develop.

Carragher, naturally, had started it by clattering into Pienaar in the opening seconds and the game continued as a battle of wills with everything being used to claim an advantage.

As the game grew more, in Moyes' word, "feisty", both sides looked for warriors. Everton had Cahill while Liverpool were not lacking. Mascherano was everywhere, Kuyt was tireless while Lucas was exceptional in his industry.

Everton were so outraged by Rafael Benitez's claim a few years ago that they were a "small club" that they issued a public denial. On Friday, Moyes seemed to retaliate by saying that Liverpool were only a big club because they had overspent and they would now be tumbling to Everton's level. Liverpool have certainly overspent but on what is a matter of dispute as the club tries to accommodate its debt and the demands of their supporters.

Both will be placated if Liverpool keep on winning. It looked unlikely yesterday when the game seemed to move beyond their control with Kyrgiakos's sending-off.

The defender couldn't complain after lunging in two-footed, but Marouane Fellaini, who ended up going to hospital for an X-ray, could have been booked at least for his counter-challenge which left Kyrgiakos needing stitches. Fellaini had previously avoided a booking, despite going in dangerously on Kuyt who, having already been booked, could have also been shown another yellow.

Pienaar's tackle led to the explosion however. He went in over the top of Mascherano, mangling the Argentinian's shinpad. Atkinson punished it only with a yellow, the same colour Carragher saw when he sought immediate retribution, hunting Pienaar down and, unlike in the opening minutes, not bothering to play the ball.

There had been a few spells of football in the first half. Cahill should have scored for Everton but headed over while Gerrard clipped the top of the bar with a free-kick. The sending-off subdued the home crowd and brought the calm the referee's non-interventionist policy had failed to do.

At half-time, Moyes told his players to use their extra man. "I told them to keep the ball and play but we didn't create enough chances with an extra man." Moyes felt the sending-off encouraged Liverpool in their mood of defiance but it was from a set-piece that the home side took the lead.

Liverpool had built some pressure with a series of corners. Gerrard isn't always accurate with his delivery but in the 54th minute he was and Kuyt got the touch to put the ball past Howard.

Liverpool then retreated as Everton searched for an equaliser. Arteta had replaced Fellaini but Liverpool didn't allow him to play. Benitez's side also stood tall at set-pieces despite the presence of Cahill and, later, Yakubu and Victor Anichebe.

Moyes acknowledged the role reversal and Pepe Reina only had to tip one Yakubu shot over as Everton pressed. A few more scuffles broke out as Gerrard went in hard on Pienaar, who was finally sent off for a late challenge on Liverpool's captain.

It was a game of football that had everything except a game of football. Nobody's perfect.

Defensively we were awesome and I'm staggered by the change in us in so short a time - we've been so soft this season then over the past month we've toughen up and look as mean at the back as last season.

Just throwing it out there but has the lack of Johnson got anything to do with it?!

got to say i was more impresse3d with lucas than i was with masher at the weekend. doena good job smothering the everton midfield and didnt put a foot wrong. mash was good in midfield too up untill he was moved to right back but still did a job there for us.

Of course it does. You have a centre back there instead of a wingback and it will make you stronger defensively.

It's a matter of balance though.

I don't think it's made as much difference as us starting to play as a team again as done.

We also didn't have a single CB who's put in consistent performances until the greek popped in, and he's had an amazing steadying influence for a ring in.

End of the day personally I think we're better losing a little defensively for the attacking option he gives us.

Can't wait for him to be back streaming down the wing, he's been our top player this season and brings no end of excitement.

              JOHNSON??

he started off well but even with injuries he had been pretty poor up untill he got injured again. he wouldnt attack as much as he did early doors and looked for the easier / quicker pass centrally instaed of looking to hit the bye line. i reckon rafa has tried to mould him more into a defensive player by taking away some of his natural attacking tendancies.

Yeah 1st few games I rerally thought he was the bees knees going forward and I was excited by his arrival. Since then, mediocre at best. He'll probably end up being a good signing for us but I'm happy with Carra there for now as long as the Greek holds his form.

But we turned to ****. As an entire team. Hard to single him out as pretty poor.

And the way he was playing start of the season Rafa obviously brought him in for his attacking prowess, he'd have been benched otherwise for ignoring orders. 18m or not Rafa doesn't take ****.

Now we're starting to look like a solid team again if we can keep it up he'll hopefully release him to play his natural game upon return.

i'm not blaming johnson for us being poor but compared to his first 4-5 games for us when he attacked well for us, after that he was quite poor getting caught out of position and seems no confidence to attack. hopefully it is just down to his injury restricting him or rafa telling him to focus more on defending during our real rocky period but i'm hopefull he will return to form once back form injury.

I am in no way implying that he was responsible for our poor form.

Kuyt looks better with a defensive type player behind him so he can get forward so it's a matter of balance IMO.

Just bout started to sober up from the weekend

Saturday was a bit mad – in the pub from 11am – went the match, screamed my head off – went into town for a few beers after, got in about 8pm, dozed off and woke up at 10:30pm with a hangover haha.

Anyway – most of this may have already been said but **** it.

Firstly, well done Liverpool – great heart and character and we fully deserved the 3 points imo – it was a great game to be at – from the first minute when carra nailed that penis or pienaar or whatever his name is, set the tone.

How that little ****er penis, wasn’t sent off early on for that horror **** bag tackle on mascherano was a joke. – Similarly, how the **** did fellani get away with that ****ing boot on kuyt!!! I think when that happened, the greek decided first chance i get I am going through him.

Then the sending off – from where i was, first thoughts were the greek lunged in two footed and had to go – when u see the replay, both should have gone.

At the time i was concerned – because fellani was being a horrible cunt, winning everything in the air and looked like he would be too strong for lucas in midfield, and with the greek off – if fellani had stayed on I think it would have been a different story – he would have just stayed on the edge of the box and the ball booted to him all game – so for me it was a great relief when i saw him limp off – i don’t like saying this but **** it, he is a horrible dirty cunt and I was made up when he went off injured.

After that – well Everton where ****e – that heitinga is ****ing wank!! I have never seen anyone like it – every single time the ball came to him, he took one touch, and hit an angled 60 yard hoof. I had to laugh, cause at one stage, howard was taking short goal kicks to him, and then heitinga hoofed it howard would have been better off hoofing it himself.

Javier MAscherano!!! What a player. He played his ****ing heart out, and out of position was excellent at right back – my man of the match, though i have to say every* player should hunger and desire which was great to see.

Highlight of the game – other than the goal – Carragher telling the Kop to **** off not many people in the world could get away with that

*Now for the low – The worst performance i have ever seen in a Liverpool shirt – step forward ryan babel – it was ****ing disgraceful – so bad, I am going to send him some **** on twitter

An absolute disgrace imo. With 30 minutes to go, 1-0, down to 10 men in the ****ing derby – he comes on for Ngog, a young lad who has just ran his ****ing heart out. And he looked like he just couldn’t be arsed, not interested. He should be quick enough and fit enough, to run himself into the ground for 30 minutes. I’d be shocked if he broke into a sweat. The taxi driver who took us into town after the game put it perfectly “we’re not looking for ****ing hat-tricks ryan lad, we are just looking for some effort” –

even if he never touched the ball and just spent the 30 minutes, running from one side of the pitch to the other and back again, he would have done enough to at least warrant a “well done” – with his pace and fitness – in that situation all you want, is for him to put the effort in and harass the defenders – if the right back has it, sprint to him, if he passes it inside to the centre back, turn and sprint to him, if he then passes it to the left back, carry on sprinting to him – and when the ball eventually goes forward – well done, you have done your job, take a breather, and be ready to start it again.

He moans about not getting a chance, he has said he wants to be a striker in the past, and he wants to play more – well wake up dickhead, playing at a top side, or even becoming a top player, isn’t just all about standing still, waiting for the ball, then doing a step over and shooting. Occasionally, even the best players in the world like messi and ronaldo are required to do a thankless job for the team and put some effort in. I’d never pick the cunt again. If he had done what we all wanted in that situation, ran about, worked hard, and basically anytime the ball went into their half he sprinted after it and didn’t stop until it went back into our half – then fair play. But don’t ever expect to start for Liverpool on the back of that ****e.

Other than that – pleased with the result, but i don’t want to get too excited – we still lack for me, that little bit of class/quality/flare. If we had a fit torres, yossi and johnson available then i would be thinking we could really push on and nick 3rd from arsenal. But with the squad as it is, it’s going to be a tough long battle for 4th. Next to games are massive, if we can get another two scrappy wins against arsenal and man citeh then were will be in with a good chance. May worry though is there is only so many games you can scrape and battle trhough, eventually you are going to have do something a bit more and we just don’t look like we have that at the moment.,

Initially when he came on he was fairly close to Arteta when he had the ball but then they swapped it and put Cahill deeper and Arteta further forward.
Well it must have worked then as they cancelled each other out - Babel, Cahill and Arteta were all equally ****e
