possibly this game with unirea is an ideal time to play degen at right back. we need to attack and get goals, they shouldnt be that big a threat with most of their best players apparently leaving after CL knockout and it may also help with confidence for him.

N'gogMy appologies but the way you posted your formation it looked like 2 holding mids.Originally posted by Scratch View PostCos i don't see Aquilani or Lucas as holding midfielders, but more attack minded, especially Aquilani. Lucas i see playing the box-to-box role, while Aquilani will be more advanced for more of the game.
Craig, i did think about Degen on the right, with Babel up front, but i wasn't sure if he was fit, so i went for Babel an N'Gog instead.
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

I knew you'd say that.Originally posted by SlovenianKopite View Postthey could get injured in a preseason friendly, they could get injured in training, or crossing the street.. if they're fit, they should play untill we get comfrotably ahead, then take them off and give some youngsters a chance.
Of course they could get injured in a friendly or in training too.
You could have a car crash driving at 20mph and you can also have a car crash driving at 150mph - so why dont you go around driving at 150mph all the time?

Isnt it based on 5 years worth of performance? I doubt one bad season will **** us up. Did the mancs ranking go downhill the year they finished bottom of their group?Originally posted by Assassin View PostAs much as I cant be arsed about this cup. We need to make at least the Semi's to keep our Uefa ranking high. If we go early we will drop down the seedings.

That's not really the point. Them being paid large sums of money isnt relevant, and it wouldnt be unless they CHOSE not to play in the Unirea game, which of course isnt the case.Originally posted by SlovenianKopite View Postyeah but i'm not payed large sums of money to go driving around 150mph am i?
It's not the players refusing to play, it's some of us saying they shouldnt be risked. What's their salary got to do with anything whatsoever?
The (obvious) point i was making was that, whilst people can indeed be injured in training or in any games, you can reduce the probability of them being injured by not risking them for some games.
Just like you can reduce the probability of having a car accident by not driving at 150mph, because obviously whilst anything is possible, there's greater degrees of probability and likelihood involved depending on how you undertake certain situations.

i understand that i really do, but for me this game is not to be risked in resting players, whilst the return leg can be, providing we get a good result tommorow.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostThat's not really the point. you get injured two ways, the first is accidental, and you can have no barring when that's going to happen, so you can drive the protection of players to the extreme, and only play them in a handful of matches. the second way is through fatigue, and our players have had a comfortable run of games in last month so they should be in good shape to handle two games per week.
anyways this "argument" has gone as far as it's going to go, so i fold

i hope we win tommorow regardless of the lineup, and go on to 4th place and a cup final to look forward to

Supporters rally behind downgraded Liverpool
Tony Barrett
It was a measure of the dysfunctional nature of Liverpool’s Champions League campaign that the club’s hierarchy were defending the Europa League before their exit from the continent’s elite competition had been confirmed.
The case put forward was convincing enough: three home games in the Europa League would allow Liverpool to make up for any budgetary shortfall, a mood of positivity would endure and, in the words of Christian Purslow, the managing director, there was the prospect of “taking 40-50,000 fans to Hamburg in May” for the final.
If ticket sales for the first step on that journey are anything to go by, the supporters have bought into that dream. The club have sold 40,000 tickets for the first leg of their round-of-32 tie against Unirea Urziceni, of Romania, which suggests that their involvement in the Europa League has not had the profoundly negative effect on the fans that many had predicted.
It remains to be seen how the Liverpool players will adapt to life in the second tier, however, and not even Rafael Benítez can convince on that front.
“It is difficult to say,” the manager said when asked whether a lack of motivation could be a problem against their fellow Champions League dropouts, who warmed up for tonight’s match with a 1-0 win over Northwich Victoria, of the Blue Square North, on Monday.
“Today the training session was good — it had intensity and everyone was focused. Tomorrow before the game we will see how the atmosphere is, but it depends on us, if we can play well and get everyone behind us. You have to adapt.
“The problem, and it is a good problem, is that we were always involved in the Champions League since I was here, but now we will try to do well in the Europa League.”
However, it is a trophy that no one at Anfield would be particularly keen to defend should they go on to win it. The target for the rest of this campaign is to ensure that Champions League qualification is achieved via a place in the top four of the Barclays Premier League.
George Gillett Jr, the co-owner, has suggested that Liverpool’s travails represent nothing more than a blip, but the longer the search for investment goes on, the more the feeling grows that a regular berth among the also-rans of English and European football awaits, and that any such decline could be accelerated should Manchester City beat them to fourth place.
Such a scenario is not one that Benítez is prepared to countenance. “Clearly I have confidence we will finish in the top four and be in the Champions League again,” the Spaniard said. “We have to do our best in every competition. We want to be successful and be in the top four.”
The imminent return to fitness of a trio of players — Fernando Torres, Glen Johnson and Yossi Benayoun are able to take part in full training again, although only Benayoun stands a chance of featuring against Unirea — has lifted Benítez’s spirits and reaffirmed his belief that Liverpool will maintain top-four status.
He also scornfully dismissed proposals for the introduction of play-offs to determine the final Champions League place. “To play three, maybe four [extra] fixtures when you don’t have time with international football — when will you play, how can you play these games, and what does it mean for the team that finishes fourth?” Benítez said.
“Maybe we can do the same with the teams at the bottom of the table. If you finish fourth maybe you could play the team who finished third from bottom. Then during the whole season we can play 50 games and we don’t have to rest, so that will be fantastic.
“We are playing too much now. They were talking about a 39th game being played in Asia. If we now play the play-offs, we’ll be playing until the end of the century.”

From ESPN
Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun (rib) is unlikely to be risked, January signing Maxi Rodriguez is ineligible but defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos, currently serving a domestic suspension, is available.
Midfielder Alberto Aquilani is back after missing last Wednesday's defeat at Arsenal through illness.
Unirea forward Antonio Semedo is close to being 100% having struggled for fitness in the Champions League campaign.
Midfielders Iulian Apostol and Ricardo Vilana, forward Marius Bilasco, and defenders Pablo Brandan and George Galamaz are all one booking away from suspension.Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.
