    Lucas and Mascherano

is the worst central midfield this club has ever had and I'm filled with dread and despair every time I look at our line up and notice both of their names on the team sheet. This opinion is based on the entire season and not just one game.

They are absolutely atrocious and perhaps more than anyone else, epitomize everything that's wrong with this team:

    1. They are physically inferior to nearly every other central midfield in the league, they have no way of imposing their presence on the football pitch. Mascherano runs around and tackles a lot, but that's not enough to boss the game. His whole abilities are dependent on reaction to the other team's players, therefore he can only be as good as the opposition is, which is one of our team's biggest symptoms.

    2. They have the mental capacity and football intelligence of the breeding experiments of Titus Bramble and Emile Heskey. They commit silly fouls, their decision making is terrible and they constantly put us under pressure against lesser teams.

    3. They have no technique. They can't pass, they can't properly control the ball under pressure, and if they somehow succeed in doing so it's the exception rather than the rule and is probably the result of an accident, luck or statistical anomalies.

    4. They have no abilities in creating an initiative, organizing an attack, or maintain long periods of possession, which is crucial elements of any midfield, which makes them the biggest culprits of our **** football this season in my opinion.

In conclusion, they are ****. I will not shed a tear if both of them are sold in the summer and we start from scratch. The truth is, Mascherano is overrated and nowhere near worth the price tag talked about. He's a role player who can compliment a star studded team and act as their water carrier.

He's always going to look good when we're under pressure, and he's always going to be useless when we have the ball, so if people are going to mention his good performances and how we've missed him last year against Chelsea or how him and Lucas were studs when we beat the mancs, I already know that but that doesn't defeat my argument. They can only be as good as the opposition and a top team can't afford these kind of players.

A cheaper player with far less reputation can do the same job Masch does, and if he's more capable of passing as well as being bigger in stature and better in the air, he'll be a superior player in my book.

Lucas, enough said about him. I've been patient with him this season, at the start I was willing to give him a chance and supported him. But the problem is that he's not very good. He can keep passing sideways, backwards and sideways again somewhere else.

The team will continue to be the antithesis to how football should be played as long as both of them are in the line up. We have other problems obviously but there isn't a clearer and more obvious one than this.

I agree in parts mate, Mascherano needs someone with a bit of flair next to him, its so negative having these two in midfield.

The partnership itself is a very negative one. Its fine for keeping cleen sheets but its no use for winning football matches and playing the beautiful game the right way.

However, I take issue with you blaming Mascherano. He is world class at what he does, he has been one of our best players this season aside from the first 6 weeks or so. The problem is that Lucas is not creative or attacking enough to warrant a place next to him

I agree in part with what you are saying, and that part is that they aren't an effective partnership. This doesn't make either (or both) of them bad players. For me this is another critisism of them for not being Alonso or an Alonso-type player, because that is what we are lacking. If we had Alonso this season along side either of them you wouldn't be saying they were bad players. Yes a problem does exist in the centre of midfield in that we lack creativity and someone who can dominate the game, and we need someone to come in and play alongside one of those two. Personally prefer to see either Aquilani (although he's been poor recently) or Gerrard back in that role alongside one of those two. If that happens I believe we would be more effective.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

What a ridiculous thread , Mascherano captain of Argentina and Lucas a Brazilian international the worst centre midfielders this club has ever had!!!

What a pile of ****, oh for the days of Paul Stewart and Nigel Clough in centre midfield or indeed any team sheet that included Salif Diao as one of the centre midfielders
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Definitely a lack of creativity in this team, but there was before this season, so I don't think it's a 'lack of Alonso' argument tbh. And I would agree that Masch is over rated, but at least he's not Robbie Savage.

Tp be fair to both of them though, I don't understand why we play two defensive midfielders in the first place - I can understand it against Chelsea or Man U, but why against much inferior teams?
              Really?

JohnDoe has a point but he's way overstated it, total hyperbole.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Mascherano makes us handicapped by putting the entire burden of attacking and creating on the other player, essentially it forces us to play with a lone striker because one central midfielder doing everything is impossible. There aren't a lot of players like Alonso around, so a change is needed. We've looked best this season in terms of football when Gerrard and Lucas started in a midfield two earlier in the season, and that tells something.

Mascherano is not world class, he's been carried by Alonso and it's showing now. Anything world class needs to be able to pass the ball, I don't care what position someone plays in, if he can't pass the ball then he's not good enough to be labeled as world class. If we are going to build the team around Masch and trying to find a partner good enough to cover for his deficiencies, we'll be in trouble because there's no one out there available who's going to do that.

Our best chance is dropping Gerrard back in line with Aquilani, and play like this:

                  Mascherano
                  Gerrard Aquilani

But it'll still be smarter business to sell him when his stock his high and use the money to invest on better all around players.

They are great for closing people down, for example the united game.

Agree though it is a defensive, negative pairing.

Mascherano being the captain of Argentina is certainly doing well for their team, isn't it. A leader he most certainly isn't.

These are our first choice central midfielders playing week in week out.

I think Aquilani would be first choice alongside one of them (Mascherano probably) if he were fully fit

Doesn't matter, they've still been playing every week this season and have been treated as first choice. I can think of many line ups without Aquilani that can be far better options than them two together and they haven't been used.
