Torres, Gerrard and Mascherano would want guarantees that we will compete next season and I'm fairly sure that at least two of them would be pissed off that Rafa has gone (not Gerrard obviously).

Sacking Rafa was the least progressive thing because 1) they only gave him a 5 year contract only last season after giving him the power to oversee a complete restructure of the Academy 2) he was the only one who could rectify quickly from last season's debacle simply because he knows the club inside out already, which wouldn't be the case for a new manager.

In short, I think we're set for a massive rebuilding job, possibly starting from scratch.
An overhaul isn't going to happen until we get new owners. Also I'm not sure it's necessary, hopefully we can hang on to the academy staff and keep developing players, as that seems to be going quite well at present, we have some good young talent and finally it seems coaches who are capable of developing players. I think some of the players there could ultimately be Rafa's legacy.

The first team performed very poorly last season and to be honest I can't see them performing that badly again, if the new manager can get them playing with confidence, I think we have the spine of a very good team (assuming we don't suffer major player departures this summer). I think whoever is manager should be able to get us at least challenging for 4th spot and (providing rival clubs don't go too crazy in the transfer market) and we make a couple of decent signings I think we should get 4th spot. We have 12 or 13 players at the world cup, so things aren't that bad!
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

That's why I'm 100% the name I mentioned but I don't think many on here are to be honest. There's also a few managers who seem to have this chameleon like knack of doing well wherever they go (Van Gaal and Hiddink) but I don't think we'll get either.
The club has had a great chance to build a dynasty, with Rafa already in charge for 6 years plus him having a long term contract, we would have been seeing the results of all that building sooner rather than later. This season never went to plan but there were glaring explanations for it, lots of injuries, players starting the season badly off form and the Alonso and Mascherano saga which disrupted our pre-season plans. Then, the belief quickly drained out of the team - despite going on an excellent run up to the Fiorentina debacle.

Now that the chance for building a dynasty is gone, I can't see us building from what we have, it will be dismantled for another change. There's an extremely slim chance that we will be competing for major honors any time soon, not without a strong financial commitment from the owners.

How would you call it if we had to lose Mascherano, Torres and Gerrard this season, wouldn't you call this an overhaul?

I think one will go, perhaps two but I can't see all three leaving. Obviously they would need to be replaced, Torres and the Gerrard of old would be difficult to replace.

I can't disagree with any of that but as said before there are a few managers who I believe could come in and carry on Rafa's dynasty without a need for dismantlation (Van Gaal, Capello for example) so I don't think you necassirily need to take such a strong stance on your view point. If you've already come to the conclusion that it's unlikely we'll get one these managers then, yeah, I see where you're coming from.

Van Gaal and Capello both have contracts with 1) Bayern 2) England, so I can't see them coming here.

What worries me about the names that are being linked to liverpool is that they seem all to be in their late fifties early sixties.

Of course 5 years is a long time in football but for the likes of Hodgson who s 62, well hes hardly going to build a lasting platform from which liverpool can move on from.

I would rather we took a chance on an upcoming talent in his late fourties / early fifties who has had ten years experience in the game with proven success.(other than the obvious candidates of Benitez / Mourihno)

I dont know how many candidates are out there that fit this criteria, but this is what liverpool need.

Liverpool have a pretty good core to the team right now.

If Gerrard left for 30 mill would we be weaker.

                I doubt it

If Mascher left for 30 mill would we be dramtically weaker

                I doubt it

If Torres left for 70 mill would we be dramtically weaker

                Yes definitely

the biggest challenge for the new manager is to hold onto Torres.

Personally I think Rafa will go off an be a great success somewhere else for a couple of years, but
Jacques Brel is alive and well and playing at Anfield

Short term-ism only brought us to what we have now (i.e. another team to rebuild).

fair point, i guess the idea of the dynasty is to go on a constant winning run for years, like the scum have...?

you either spend lots and have turnover in players and managers or you build a long term plan.

the long term plan is the most stable and the most "british" however things change but its my favoured approach

They've only been able to achieve that through constant investment in their team. I think you'll see them reaching a plateau, now that they don't seem to have the financial depth that they enjoyed all those years, unless they can re-invest what they got for Ronaldo last year. I'm not even sure they can and I'm not even sure we would do that if we had to part with Gerrard, Mascherano and Torres. The money would be going in to service the debts.

true, but they still managed to win it.. very rarely does the team with little to no money to spend go on a winning streak... i dont think its ever happened since the epl started... maybe arsenals wins are the only time or did they spend big too?

We are so ****ed. The two cunts might as well manage the team as well. At least the death of the club would be swift, rather than the long agonising death the club is currently experiencing
