    Holy ****.

Rafael Benitez admitted he was pleased with the response of his players during the 1-0 defeat at Lille and then backed them to overturn the first-leg deficit at Anfield next week.

Eden Hazard's late strike means the Reds have it all to do in the second-leg on Merseyside, but the boss is confident that they can still progress to the quarter-finals if they show the same desire to win on home turf.

"I think it was an improvement," he told his post-match press conference.

"The reaction has been very positive. I am disappointed with the result, but really pleased with the effort of the players.

"I have confidence we can beat anyone on a good day at Anfield. I would be worried today if the players hadn't worked as hard as they have. The fans will play a part, they will push and will be behind the team.

"Lille are a good side, with good players and they are dangerous. We will play a difficult game at Anfield but have confidence we can beat them."

On a bitterly cold night in northern France, Liverpool had their opportunities to score an all-important away goal, with Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres both going close.

Benitez accepts a first-leg strike could have made all the difference to the tie but remains upbeat about his side's hopes.

"When you play away in these knockout competitions, you have to score when you have chances," he said.

"In any competition it is important to try and score away, particularly in this one. It is a great advantage if you do. If not you have to be strong, but I think we were strong enough today.

"We had two or three situations, so that was a pity, but the reaction was good and we still have 90 minutes to play.

"Sometimes you play well and score an early goal - then you can manage the game. If we work as hard as we did today, we can beat anyone.

"The attitude of the players was fantastic. We were talking about not letting the fans down in terms of team effort and I think we did this.

"Every game is important for us now. We have to be ready to play Portsmouth and try to win. Then we have to look to the Europa League game, that is how it is when you are a top side playing in different competitions."

Asked about Fernando Torres's form as he continues on his return from injury, the boss added: "He was working hard today. You can see he has his pace coming back. But the main thing was the team and the players played at the level you expect of them."

I think you're seeing what you want to believe rather than the facts. An attacking team, full of skillful attacking players cannot be negative. But hey

Not been great this season mainly due to fitness, but generally, he's hardly ****.

Gerrard's never been great for england, for what it's worth. It's never impacted on his Liverpool performances though.

It was like a repeat of Monday night, **** pitch, **** performance and no-one turned up, not even Reina.

Why, oh why did Babel get hooked before Kuyt ???

My brother called about ten mins ago from Lille as he went, the players were warming down, and the lot of them got booed !!

Anyone think Portsmouth may do us on Monday ?
I make no apologies, this is me

Another thing that pisses me off. Sammy Lee. Has that man got no balls whatsover? What exactly is he doing? Im so dissapointed, he's supposed to be number 2 but to me it looks like its Pellegrino.

May sound harsh but I really expected sammy to be a bit more vocal, don't think he has any influence whatsoever

I dont think gerrard and carra are with the manager and at the end of the season it will be interesting to see just how many points alonso was worth to us.

Probably 20 or so I think.
Can't argue with that, but like I said I don't believe in the losing the dressing room stuff.

Unquestionably Xabi has been a huge loss, but there were so many times when we played well and achieved great results when he was with us but not playing due to injury or whatever. Confidence back then was obviously much higher, and I believe our players lost confidence at the start of this season and have been too gutless to rekindle it. They've shown no reserves of character - something we showed in spades last season with the amazing late surges to force last-minute winners.

Exactly, or even Gerrard for that matter. Im glad they got booed. I don't know what to expect anymore, weve already been outplayed by Portsmouth once this season

It's amazing that a guy who realises how important an away goal is, still sends his side out with such a cautious mentality.

He clearly has very different expectations than i do.
