We need another 4 or 5 top class players - Torres.

When asked by Spanish newspaper AS if he planned to leave the Reds if they failed to qualify for the Champions League, Torres said: 'It's too soon to talk, I honestly think that we're going to be fourth, but for me Champions League qualification isn't so important.

'The really important thing is that the club makes a big effort and brings in important players, who will improve the quality of the squad.

'We need four or five top-class players to compete, better than we have here, who will make us grit our teeth and do everything we can to try and keep our places.

'Without reinforcements next year we will once again be fighting to be fourth.

'I want to fight next year to win the Premier League, to win the Champions League or the Europa League, but for this there have to be signings.'

Referred back to the initial question about his future, Torres added: 'There are so many circumstances and so many things that you have to take into account that it is too soon to talk about that. But I have this and three more years of my contract.

'I've left my home and it's clear that I owe Liverpool many things, and I'm very happy here.

'The fans have treated my like one of their own, but I'm going to think about my future and hopefully it will be here. I think these fans deserve to win.

'Beyond thinking about me, I think the club deserve to get back to winning (trophies), but they know themselves that right now that it's far off.

'The fans are worried about players going, it's a problem when you start to fear that your players are going because you know it's because the club is not moving forward, but I don't think that is going to be the situation here.

'Since the arrival of (managing director) Christian Purslow Liverpool have had an important boost, we signed with a big-money sponsor to match Real Madrid, then things are going to go forward.'

The question is - who will replace who?

Another world class striker means that Kuyt will be a reserve (ouch Rafa)
Another world class winger definetly means that one or possibly 2 of Riera/Ben./maxi/Babel will be sold.
Gerrard as central midfield will mean Lucas on the bench if Masch decide to renew the contract.

Obviously I agree withTorres 100%, hope that Rafa (if he stays) makes the right decisions!!!!

Fernando Torres issues Liverpool FC ultimatum

Fernando Torres has hinted that his future could lie elsewhere if Liverpool do not invest in new players this summer.

A muted campaign has seen the Reds struggling to build on last year's achievement of Premier League runners up, with only a fourth place finish and winning the Europa League offering any glimmers of hope for Rafael Benitez's side.

In a bid to stop the rot, Torres has insisted that securing Champions League qualification and lifting silverware would pale in significance if reinforcements are not brought in during the close season.

When asked by Spanish newspaper AS if he would quit Anfield, he said: "It's too soon to talk, I honestly think that we're going to be fourth, but for me Champions League qualification isn't so important.

"The really important thing is that the club makes a big effort and brings in important players, who will improve the quality of the squad.

"We need four or five top-class players to compete, better than we have here, who will make us grit our teeth and do everything we can to try and keep our places.

"Without reinforcements next year we will once again be fighting to be fourth.

"I want to fight next year to win the Premier League, to win the Champions League or the Europa League, but for this there have to be signings."

Torres, 25, has three years remaining on his current deal and insists that he is happy at Liverpool but that normal service needs to be resumed to keep important players at the club and repay the supporters' loyalty.

He added: "There are so many circumstances and so many things that you have to take into account that it is too soon to talk about that. But I have this and three more years of my contract.

"I've left my home and it's clear that I owe Liverpool many things, and I'm very happy here. The fans have treated my like one of their own, but I'm going to think about my future and hopefully it will be here. I think these fans deserve to win.

"Beyond thinking about me, I think the club deserve to get back to winning (trophies), but they know themselves that right now that it's far off.

"The fans are worried about players going, it's a problem when you start to fear that your players are going because you know it's because the club is not moving forward, but I don't think that is going to be the situation here."

Maybe we should look at some of the players from Lazio and Udinese (but not Italian ones obviously ), both clubs are just above the relegation zone, which might make some of the players there unhappy. Zarate is the first that comes to mind and Alexis Sanchez also seems a very good young player already...

If Torres isn't happy with the players around him he can **** right off!

He's right of course, we do need improvements in the first team. I don't think it helps this season's campaign to criticise the other players, some of whom will be thinking "does he mean me?". I still think our first team is as good as any other in the Premiership except Chelsea who should be running away with the league this season.

IMO that just gives H&G an excuse to offload him, 'Oh he wants to leave, he doesn't understand the financial situation' etc etc

As for the heat being on H&G, like water off a ducks back to them, they're hardly ever in this country.

I'd expect something a little more dramatic something along the lines of "City ready to pounce as Torres seeks Anfield exit"
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Or maybe it's just what the owners want. My hope was that if they tried to raise funds by selling torres, he'd refuse a move. Not sure now.

£70m for Torres = the owners get to keep control of the club.

I think they'll be delighted at this ultimatum. Rubbing their hands, in fact. The ****ing cunts.

Almost certainly mate. I just want this season over and done with. It's like watching a dear beloved relative who was once full of life, slowly die and wither away

Interesting comments. For the first time yet there is a hint that Torres will move on if investment doesn't come. I can still see him here next season regardless, but if City do get 4th and strengthen their top 4 status with the purchases only CL football and deep pockets can attract he'll be long gone the season after.

I wouldn't blame him in the slightest. We knew what the score was, he left Atletico because they could not compete and he'll leave us too.

It can be looked out in many different ways, thankfully the press will put a positive spin on it.

                              Sounds plausible.
