Mascherano wants 4 year deal so we offer 2??

    Just read this:-

Manchester United v Liverpool: Javier Mascherano tells Rafa Benítez to deal him in

In a week when Rafa Benítez asked for others to follow Pepe Reina’s example and sign themselves up to his long-term Liverpool project, Javier Mascherano has suggested that it is the club, not the players, that need to be more proactive.

Last weekend, Mascherano’s team-mate Fernando Torres outlined his consternation about the direction Liverpool were going in and offered the opinion that they urgently needed to sign “four or five” players over the summer.

Then came the mutinous comments from Albert Riera (suspended by the club this weekend).

Benítez style needs tweak And now Mascherano has had his say on the good ship Liverpool, the direction it is going, and why he hasn’t agreed a new deal.

It is understood that Mascherano is not waiting for the same assurances as Torres about Liverpool’s transfer budget or policy before he agrees to a new deal.

Rather, it appears that all he is after is for someone from the club to move the situation forward. A deal worth £100,000-a-week has been mooted in order to seal his future on Merseyside until at least 2012 and to ward off interest from suitors including Champions League holders Barcelona. However, he is believed to be holding out for a four-year deal to 2014.

But if the deal is already done, nobody has bothered to tell the player about it. “I’m waiting for an answer,” he said. “They know what I want – it depends on them and not me.”

When Liverpool visit Old Trafford in Sunday, Mascherano will walk out into the arena that has given him his two most contrasting memories since he signed for the club on loan in February 2007.

Firstly, there was his mental implosion on the touchline following his draconian dismissal by referee Steve Bennett in Liverpool’s 3-0 loss in March 2008, before happier times last season as a member of the side that beat United in an astonishing 4-1 victory.

But the 25 year-old insists he is not dwelling on the past. It is clearly all about the United match for him and he is hoping that another victory against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side on their own soil will unnerve Aston Villa, Manchester City and Tottenham to allow Liverpool to secure fourth spot.

“It’s difficult for us, for the supporters and I think it will be hard but in our minds we know that we can beat them.

“We have to win for us because we need to be in the Champions League next season. It will be hard for the other teams involved in fourth place to take if we beat United – it will be a shock.”

I hope this is a mis-understanding, if he wants a 4 year deal, sign him up now!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mirror interpret it as wanting more money. Expect the next story to say he wants a new yacht and a Barca kit...

Mascherano demands mega pay-rise to stay at Liverpool

Javier Mascherano has told Liverpool that he wants a £1million-a-year pay-rise to stay at Anfield.

The Argentina captain met with Kop chief executive Christian Purslow again last week in a bid to secure his long-term future at the club.

Mascherano, hit by the hike in the top band tax rate to 50 per cent, wants to see his basic salary rise to £90,000 a week for a two-year extension that would keep him at Liverpool for the next four years.

Liverpool are unlikely to resist given that it fits into their own wage structure and that Barcelona are ready to renew their interest in the midfielder.

But Mascherano said: “I am waiting for an answer. They know what I want. At this stage everything depends on Liverpool, not me.

“We have spoken about the contract again and I am ready to sign.”

Liverpool have signed Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun on long-term deals. And keeper Pepe Reina is set to commit his future to the club after more talks.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

how long is his current contract?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

            Mascherano: I want to stay

Javier Mascherano today stressed his desire to remain on Merseyside and spoke of his confidence that he will soon put pen to paper on a new Liverpool contract.

Manager Rafael Benitez revealed this week that talks between the club and Mascherano's advisors were progressing - and the Argentine midfielder has now admitted he expects to soon commit his future to the Reds.

"The club are talking with my agents. I don't like to be involved in the contract meetings so I leave that to my agents and the people at the club," said Mascherano.

"Liverpool know I want to stay. I don't think it will be difficult to arrive at a deal and we will see what happens in the next few weeks."

There had been speculation suggesting Mascherano's Anfield career was heading to its end following reported interest from abroad, but the player himself admits he only sees himself as a Liverpool player.

"I have never said I was not happy at Liverpool," he added. "That was the press. I am happy here and the only way I can show that is with my performances on the pitch.

"I always try to do everything I can to help my teammates and manager. Sometimes I can do well and sometimes I can't, but I always look to give one hundred per cent in training and in games."

I hate the fact that when ever any player I have the slightest doubt about the loyalty of says something like that I am instantly reminded of Owen.

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has offered an additional indication of his happiness at Anfield after heaping praise on manager Rafa Benitez.

The Argentina captain is close to signing a new contract and said on Thursday that he hopes to agree a deal in the 'next few weeks'.

Mascherano was strongly linked with Barcelona last summer, but has told Liverpool that he wants to stay and it would appear that Benitez is a major factor in that decision.

Albert Riera has been highly critical of the Spaniard's managerial style, but Mascherano believes his boss has made him 'a better player and a better person'
"All managers have different ways of working," said the 25-year-old, who was rescued from the fringes of a struggling West Ham squad in January 2007 by Benitez.

"Rafa is totally different from (Argentina coach) Diego Maradona and the other managers I've had.

"For three and a half years I've been working with Rafa and I can now say I'm a better player and a better person from when I arrived here. That's down to Rafa and his staff."

                    Difficult
After a below-par start to the season when is was suggested Mascherano's head had been turned by the Barcelona speculation, the defensive midfielder has become one of Liverpool's most reliable performers in a difficult campaign.

He believes the team have to win their remaining seven matches, starting with a home game against Sunderland on Sunday, to secure fourth place in the Premier League and the resulting UEFA Champions League football next season.

"I think we will have to win all our games. We have seven finals and we have to win all of them to have hope of finishing fourth," said Mascherano.

"If we can win 21 points, maybe we will be there. If not, it will be very difficult."

Liverpool have won only four times in the Premier League on their travels this season and Mascherano is aware that statistic needs to be addressed.

"I think the problem for us this season has been the away form," he said.

"Obviously we have to keep going in the same way at home, but if we want to have hopes of finishing fourth, we have to improve away."

                        Heard it too.

He also said that Mascher loved the club and the city, also that he and his family are very settled in liverpool.

Kia reiterated that Mascher says Rafa is responsible for the player he is now and helping him settle.

Mascher didn't mention anything about the LFC fans though, he obviously frequents these boards!
