Which is exactly how it should be, it isn't an exact science, you buy or bring in a number of young players, develop them in line with the 1st teams beliefs and the vast majority will fall by the way side and be out of football within 3 years of leaving, some go on to have a career in semi pro or professional football and even less than that come through to the 1st team.Originally posted by Kinell View PostSeems to me that the youth academy is a money maker rather than a next liverpool star maker.
1 in a million turns out to be a Gerrard, Fowler or Owen - we were just lucky they came through at a similar time.
Chelsea haven't produced anyone since Terry.
Man U have Gibson and Evans since Fergie inherited his 'fledgings' as youth players.
Arsenal have really only produced Gibbs (Fabregas, Merida, Clichy, Ramsey etc... were all bought from other clubs) Wiltshire looks a good player though.
Man City have produced Johnson, Sturridge (Richards was bought from Oldham)The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

I'm not sure it is fair to discount the players that are bought in entirely - it depends on age and the stage of development when they were bought I would have thought. For example if the players we have bought in at the under 16-18 age range make it then it is fair to say that they were developed strongly at the club and really it is only a case of whether someone else scouted them first or not.Originally posted by The Birdman View PostWhich is exactly how it should be, it isn't an exact science, you buy or bring in a number of young players, develop them in line with the 1st teams beliefs and the vast majority will fall by the way side and be out of football within 3 years of leaving, some go on to have a career in semi pro or professional football and even less than that come through to the 1st team.

Other than that I agree with the thrust of your argument."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

in fact thinking of it........the majority of our youth are 'signed' from other clubs....even the english lads.
from the long list of loaned players above, and in the last 4 or 5 years - at the moment i can only see players like darby, spearing, Linfield, threfall, kelly - who haven't been signed from elsewherei own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Some comments lifted from player ratings threads (from two games - 4-0 win v QPR and 2-1 defeat to Cardiff) on a Leicester City forum...
QPR:
Spearing 7. I didn't think he was any improvement on OakleySpearing 7. Terrier like performance. nothing noticed but did a lot of tidying up.Spearing 7Spearing - 7 - Didn't see to much of him today, seemed to chase the ball well, won back what he lost.Spearing 8 - so much better then OakleySpearing 6.5 - Not great on the ball admittedly, but ran his socks off to win it back at times. Everywhere in midfield today.Spearing 7. ****.Spearing -6- No lack of effort but I think he struggled with is position at times. Didn't seem to know where he was playingSpearing 7 - A breath of fresh air. Just that extra bit of energy and bite we seem to have been lacking.Spearing - 6Spearing - 6.5Spearing-7 some good touches, but a bit slow around the park maybe??Spearing 7 - An improvement to OakleySpearing 7 - Disagree that he wasn't an improvement on Oakley, he looks like he could be a really good player, was competitive, some good passing, but struggled when we couldn't keep the ball in the first half. Met him after, his breath stinks.Spearing 7Spearing 7 - Thought he did ok, some nice touches, worked hard (one particularly lung-bursting run into the box in the second half). Better than Oakley.Spearing 8 - Much improved on Oakley. Chased the ball and played some nice passes in and around the midfield.Spearings 8Spearing 7.5Cant believe people on here saying Spearing no better than Oakley, ive spent all afternoon listening to a bunch of morons in SK2 moaning on about him too. I thought he chased and won the ball back well and gave wellens and king more time. I am gunna have to move to L1 or somewhere else before I kill someone or if its like that everywhere just stay away.
Cardiff:
Spearing - 5. Gave the ball away too much, but will reserve judgment of his ability after seeing him play more.Spearing 6 - Totally unimpressed so far, but give him a goSpearing - 6 Much better in the second half and can see something in the guy.Spearing 7Can never be fvcked to do the whole thing but gotta disagree with some of the ratings for N'guessan, thought he did alright. Yeah, he made some mistakes and failed to beat his man a couple of times but caused them as many problems as anyone else first half imo, was genuinely suprised to see him go off. To give him a 2 is a ****ing joke, definitely put in a better shift than Spearing first half.Spearing looked fairly lively I thought. Seemed to get into some good positions and was fairly tidy on the ball. Just lacked that final ball.Spearing - 7.5 - Thought he was very good, worked hard and linked the midfield and front line very wellSpearing - he's **** isn't he.Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
