    Reserves v Bolton

    McMahon eyes Bolton hat-trick

    Paul Hassall, 29th Mar 2010 - LiverpoolFC.tv

John McMahon is confident Liverpool Reserves will bounce back to winning ways when they face Bolton in tonight's Barclays Premier Reserve League North clash – a match you can watch exclusively live on this website from 7pm BST.

The Reds struggled to hit their best form as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Wigan last time out, and the second-string's coach is eager to see a response from his players as they bid to close the gap on leaders Manchester United.

"The lads are aware we can do better and I'd like to think there will be a reaction tonight," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"We have a couple of first-team squad players with us so that should help us. Nabil El Zhar will play some part to get some minutes, as will David Ngog and Damien Plessis. It gives them some minutes because they haven't played a lot of football recently."

Liverpool will be hoping to complete a hat-trick of victories over the Trotters, having already beaten them in both the league and the Lancashire Senior Cup earlier this season.

McMahon accepts his side will be expected to pick up the three points, but insists they must not underestimate a team languishing at the foot of the table.

"It's always difficult when you play someone three or four times a season.," he said. "We play Wigan again next week, so it can be tough.

"But Bolton are a good footballing side. We've ran out comfortable winners in the past and if the lads apply themselves in the right way then you would like to think we have the quality to go on and win the game.

"I don't think you can underestimate any of the sides. You don't know what kind of team they are going to put out, they may include senior players. I think whatever team they put out will be right up for it because they are facing Liverpool."

The Reds will welcome David Amoo, Daniel Pacheco and Gerardo Bruna back into the fold for the match at the County Ground, but McMahon revealed that Francisco Duran will not be involved, after picking up an injury against the Latics.

"Francisco did really, really well but unfortunately he picked up an injury in the last game," he said. "I thought there were some heavy challenges on him. He did well to carry on for as long as he did, but he's picked up an ankle injury now and it rules him out of the game."

Doesn't sound like a serious one though. After being out for so long he's bound to pick up the odd knock here and there for a while.

On a side note, are these reserve games ever available to stream anymore, they always used to be but lately Ive not found any of them.

Also how come Pacheco seems to have been frozen out again after playing well for the first team in favour of the less talented El Zhar?

          Quite a strong lineup..

Liverpool Reserves moved to within three points of leaders Manchester United at the top of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North after a 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers at the County Ground on Monday evening.

First-team striker David Ngog, on as a half-time substitute, netted with 18 minutes remaining to break the deadlock in a tense contest in Lancashire.

And the Reds' advantage was doubled soon after as Bolton captain Rhys Bennett deflected Gerardo Bruna's free-kick beyond his own goalkeeper.

Zoltan Harsanyi reduced the arrears in stoppage time, but John McMahon's men held out to cut the gap on pacesetters United at the top of the table and the Reds still have two games in hand.

Liverpool kicked off in Leyland looking to extend their incredible 15-game unbeaten run and complete a hat-trick of victories over the Trotters this season, having already beaten them in the league and the Lancashire Senior Cup.

And the team selection reflected this as Nabil El Zhar was included in the starting XI alongside the likes of Dani Pacheco, Daniel Ayala and fit-again David Amoo, with a place on the bench for Ngog.

But Bolton made a lively start and had an early penalty appeal waved away after Michael O'Halloran went down under the challenge of Chris Mavinga inside the area.

The pacey winger brought a stop out of Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi soon after, driving towards goal from a tight angle.

However, the visitors fired a warning shot on 10 minutes when a crisp move involving Pacheco, Amoo and Dalla Valle resulted in El Zhar drilling a low effort narrowly wide of the far post.

The Reds went closer still as Amoo powered a header goalwards from Pacheco's corner, with McMahon's charges beginning to assert themselves after a bright opening from the home side.

But Gulacsi was called into action once more on 21 minutes, the Hungarian having to dive at full stretch to thwart Aaron Mooy's long-range free-kick before Bennett blazed over the rebound.

Play quickly swung to the other end of the pitch, and Dalla Valle clipped over on the spin after good approach play by Amoo down the right.

As the half hour mark approached, Sam Sheridan's low cross picked out Mooy in space inside the box, but his side-footed effort from 15 yards was collected by Gulacsi to further frustrate the Bolton midfielder.

There was a real open feel to proceedings as the rain pelted down in Lancashire, though a congested midfield battle ensured neither side had much time to dictate play.

Amoo's powerful raids down the right wing appeared to be Liverpool's best chance of breaking down the Trotters' rearguard and the 18-year-old warmed the palms of Bolton stopper Adam Bogdan with a run and shot.

McMahon opted to introduce Ngog into the action at the start of the second half at the expense of El Zhar and the Frenchman looped a header well over soon after the restart.

But the Reds' attacking options suffered a blow nine minutes into the second period when Dalla Valle was forced from the field after failing to recover from a challenge. Dutchman Jordy Brouwer was his replacement.

And the visitors could have fallen behind moments later as Sheridan's stinging effort was palmed away by Gulacsi.

Three Bolton attackers lurked ready to pounce on the loose ball, but Steven Irwin was thankfully on hand to avert the danger.

Just after the hour mark, Ngog collected Amoo's flick and powered a strike into the hoardings from the edge of the area with 'keeper Bogdan never worried, before Damien Plessis flashed over from distance.

Liverpool had enjoyed the lions' share of possession in the second period and they finally made the breakthrough on 72 minutes.

Substitute Alex Cooper claimed an impressive assist, with the Academy youngster's inviting low ball across the face of goal from the left leaving Ngog with the simple task of tapping over the line from point blank range.

And the Reds doubled their advantage moments later as Bennett inadvertently diverted Bruna's wicked free-kick from the right wing into his own net on 78 minutes.

The quick-fire double left Bolton stunned, and Liverpool pressed in search of a third in the dying moments with Ngog, Amoo and Bruna all trying their luck.

Slovakian youngster Harsanyi netted a stoppage-time consolation for Bolton, but the home side were unable to muster an equaliser as the Reds stretched their unbeaten run to 16 matches with a hard-fought win.

Bolton Reserves: Adam Bogdan, Joe Riley, Adam Blakeman, Rhys Bennett, Andrew Burns, Stuart McDonald (Liam Irwin 81), Michael O'Halloran, Sam Sheridan, Jack Sampson (Javlon Campbell 79), Aaron Mooy, Zoltan Harsanyi. Subs: Rob Lainton, Oulwasamni Odelusi, Graeme MacGregor

Liverpool Reserves: Peter Gulacsi, Steven Irwin, Chris Mavinga (Alex Cooper 66), Daniel Ayala, Victor Palsson, Dani Pacheco, Nabil El Zhar (David Ngog 46), David Amoo, Lauri Dalla Valle (Jordy Brouwer 54), Damien Plessis, Gerardo Bruna. Subs: Nikolaj Kohlert, Chris Oldfield.

Gulacsi got MOTM marginally due to no other outfield player impressing. Still looking good in goal, much better than Howler-Hanson. Outfield we played rubbish, missed Duran a lot. Mavinga is big and strong but predictable in his play. The game changed on its head with Alex Cooper was brought on and provided the only decent set up for Ngog's goal.

Bruna looked well out of his depth, probably because he hasn't played for ages. At least he took a good free kick which went if off a Bolton defender. Pachecho looked tired after his Spanish trip.

                Final score 0-2 (Ngog, N'goal)
                One tit for another.

haha, you're right. I was just thinking about Mooy being a decent player and all. For everyone else, he twisted Irwin up something rotten to cross a beauty into the box (converted) which had us on tenterhooks on 92 minutes. Game lasted 'til nearly 95 minutes within that time Bolton had another screamer just go over the crossbar. Thankfully we're now just 3 points behind manure with two games in hand.

Just a quick word on Jordy Brouwer who came on in the second half. Made some great passes for others to do better but they let him/us down. Generally held up play with great touches despite close marking and was an outlet we could rely on (unlike El Zhar, Ngog, Dalla Valle). Very Berbatov-esque (the good bit, not the lazy) performance.

There is a perverse part of me that wants him to be the one that makes it from the reserves.

Are you sure you haven't got him mixed up with Ngoo?
