    Kelly out for the season

MARTIN KELLY has suffered another crushing disappointment after he picked up an injury which will end his season.

Liverpool’s young right-back was ruled out of the squad that beat Sunderland 3-0 on Sunday after he tore his meniscus knee ligament in training 24 hours before that contest.

Fernando Torres suffered a similar problem in January, which required surgery and six weeks on the sidelines to fix and, as that will be the case again, Kelly’s campaign is over.

It is a huge blow for the 19-year-old, who is held in high regard at Anfield and has made encouraging progress in recent months.

Kelly was man-of-the-match when he made his debut in the Champions League against Lyon at Anfield last October and would have figured even more but for picking up an ankle problem in that game.

He returned to first team action when coming on as a substitute in the Europa League victory over Unirea Urziceni and then made his Premier League debut from the bench against Portsmouth but all plans for him are on hold now after this fresh setback.

One defender who knows all about injury frustrations is Daniel Agger but he showed his well being during Sunday’s demolition of Sunderland with an imperious display.

But rather than worry about his form, the Denmark international was eager to talk about what kind of impact the style in which victory was achieved can have on Liverpool’s season.

Though the Reds are going to require Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur to drop points if they are going to qualify for the Champions League, Agger feels they are coming in to form at just the right time.

To get into the top four, however, Liverpool’s form on their travels is going to have to dramatically improve but Agger hopes a good result against Benfica on Thursday evening can tee them up for the trip to Birmingham on Easter Sunday.

“The quick goal helped but it was very pleasing,” he reflected. “It was great to see Fernando (Torres) play so well. If you want to compete in the Premier League, you need players like that.

“We needed a performance like that to help us on the run-in. We played for everyone and we wanted to win to get back up the table and it was a good result.

“A clean sheet always helps and now we have to keep believing. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t but I actually thought after a good first half we dropped a bit in the second.

“We have lost some games but that is in the past now. We have got to look forward and do our best in the last few weeks.”

With better fortune, Agger might have opened his account for the season but he shrugged aside a hat-trick of misses by insisting Liverpool’s all-round performance was a handsome compensation.

“Maybe I should have hit the target but 3-0 was good enough,” said Agger.

“We definitely played better than we have done for a long time.”

That's a real shame. I can't imagine he would have got too much game time between now and the end of the season due to the critical nature of all our games now, but you never know had others picked up injuries.

That is very unfortunate. Would have been good for him even if he had just got the odd cameo appearance this season.

Out for the season doesn't quite have the same impact as we move in to April. We won't miss him as we're out of the cups, but wish him a speedy recovery.

Hopefully he will make a genuine first team impact next term.

Thankfully it is now and not the beginning of the season but I wish him a speedy recovery all the same.

How many injuries has Kelly had over the last couple of years, wasn't he out for a while last season as well are these injuries related. I really hope he doesn't prove to be another injury prone defender
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

"he tore his meniscus knee ligament" !!!???

Jeez some sports journalists are thick. You'd like to think that they'd know the difference between cartilage and ligaments given their line of work, but apparently not.
