It has taken a long while to get to what we see now, which is at least a committed player who makes an effort.

He may have made more of an effort relatively, but he hasn't really made an effort. Babel running about occasionally doesn't impress me, doing barely more than standing still isn't working for the team. Other than being a man for the opposition to mark he doesn't contribute anything. Against Benfica he was something for them to think about, a player on the pitch has to be marked. That was his role on Thursday, he just needed to do his usual thing (i.e. nothing), just stay on the pitch.
