Former Liverpool Defender Andrea Dossena Gives Insight On Juventus Target Rafael Benitez

Benitez has long been linked with Juventus, and his former player has given them a glimpse of the Spaniard's methodology

Former Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena has explained what Juventus can expect if they sign Spanish coach Rafael Benitez in the summer.

It's been widely reported that Benitez is the number one target at Vinovo to replace Alberto Zaccheroni at the end of the season. And Dossena, who played for Benitez between July 2008 and January 2010, has given an insight into his methods of coaching and style.

"Benitez loves dialogue and he works hard on tactics. In the car park, on the plane, Benitez never wastes a moment. He uses every second to give an indication and explain positions on the pitch," he told Tuttosport.

"He is always clear and gets straight to the point in the dressing room, but balanced too. He always uses a calm approach, and there was never an episode where he raised his voice."

However, there was one occasion when Benitez blew his top.

"It happened once, but I was not there. My former team-mates told me that Benitez went berserk in Florence after Liverpool lost in the Champions League [against Fiorentina]."

And, Benitez uses several ways to get his message accross to the players.

"He uses the blackboard and plenty of videos. He is a maniac when it comes to analysing the play. He always dedicates plenty on free-kicks and corners. In England it's always good to take advantage of situations where the ball is inactive," he concluded.

Never worked out for Dossena and it would be easy for him to come out and have a pop at Rafa, which he hasn't.

Seems a decent pro to me.

I was actually expecting this to be another ex-player slating him, but that's not the case. And lets it could have been easy for him to have a go, but fair play to him. I think we all knew he is very tactical and has a great attention to detail, so in that regard he's not really saying anything new.

I'm surprised about the comments relating to corners, if so much time is dedicated to taking them how come Stevie hardly ever clears the first defender?

Apparently we have the 3rd highest 'conversion rate' from corners in the league. If that's true the others must be unthinkably bad.

The one where Kuyt stands in front of the keeper and Gerrard finds him perfectly probably accounts for all of the successes though. We seem to squander many completely but perhaps we are working on the assumption that it is better to aim for a difficult corner but with high rewards if it comes off.

I wonder whether we over emphasise the poorness of our corners because we have lots of ones that are easily cleared, even if over all the stats are quite good.

On the topic of Dossena he always seemed like a good pro. Shame it didn't work out for us or him.

i thought it would be a slagging.

strange how he gets slagged by pennant but not by dossena.

tells you something of the differing mentality of those two players.

Pennant has always come across as a petulant child.

Can you ever remember a time when we have been particularly proficient from corners though

I've watched Liverpool since the mid 70's and I'll be damned if I can remember us ever being a consistant threat from corners

I agree we have never seemed like a consistent threat. However in the last few seasons stats have been quoted that indicate we are quite good (at least comparative to our PL peers). So maybe the problem is as much with perception as with execution by the team.

A lot of our corners do seem to hit the first man which seems a criminal waste but then if we score from a higher %age than others maybe there is some method in the seeming madness.

Perhaps it's the same as zonal marking. We know it has been more effective than man-to-man because we had the stats to prove it, even though the pundits didn't recognise the fact until recently, preferring to go with their perceptions rather than the facts. Now, as you say, if those stats are correct then it seems that's precisely what we have been doing with corners.

It makes you wonder what else people have got wrong, based on their perceptions...
                            .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
