Although i would be made up of carra went to the world cup, i would be disappointed because it would mean Dawson would probably miss out; he has been England's best defender this season. I would pick dawson if i was Capello.

I don't think it's anywhere near guaranteed that he'll be 4th, or even 3rd choice if he does go

Serious question marks over Ferdinand's fitness no?
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"

Could Carragher be going as a second choice right back? (as well as back up centre back) Who else is really in contention for that RB spot? Assuming Johnson is 1st choice who'd be back up Wes Brown? Micah Richards?

yes, but wio's the captains no?

anyways this could mean all 4 of our CBs are at the world cup and 3 of them will be first choice for their countries.

fatigue, and more injuries waiting to happen next season perhaps?

He won't go if he isn't at least guaranteed a place in the final 23.

Well done to the lad, he's not had the best of seasons, so its testament to his reputation that he's considered. Maybe this would be as welcome a distraction to him as many other senior and influential players in the squad. Hopefully by the time they come back a lot of the off field crap will be resolved and they'll be coming back ready to go next season.

I really think we need to develop a squad capable of managing that task at the very least. I also think we have a decent bunch of CBs to step in and a number of them need to learn to lead when Carra isn't there.

Paul Scholes is set to turn down an 11th hour invitation to go to the World Cup with England after Fabio Capello offered him the chance for a remarkable comeback.

The Manchester United player has not played for his country since Euro 2004 but Capello, who had previously tried and failed to lure Scholes out of retirement, has made one last effort to persuade him to go to South Africa as he fine tunes his provisional squad list.

With Gareth Barry almost certainly out of the tournament after damaging ankle ligaments, England have a lack of experience in central midfield. But Scholes seems certain to disappoint Capello by turning down the opportunity.

It is a measure of Capello’s unease with his midfield options that he made his late bid for Scholes, and looks set to name Owen Hargreaves in his provisional 30-man squad for South Africa when he announces it at Wembley later today.

                            * Hargreaves represents biggest gamble

Michael Carrick has endured a poor season at Old Trafford, and has even been kept out of the team by Scholes in recent weeks. Tom Huddlestone has been capped only once by England.

It is not clear how Scholes would have fitted alongside Frank Lampard - and fears that he would become a squad player spending his time on the bench must be one reason why he will not take up the offer - but his reluctance leaves Capello with real concerns in midfield.

Having persuaded Jamie Carragher to come out of retirement, Capello must have had some confidence that Scholes could be persuaded to add to his 66 caps. But the 35-year-old has always known his own mind. And it appears the offer did not hold sufficient appeal.

Paul Gascoigne is set to turn down an 11th hour invitation to go to the World Cup with England after Fabio Capello offered him the chance for a remarkable comeback.

The ex Newcastle United player has not played for his country since the World Cup qualifiers in 1998 but Capello, who had previously tried and failed to lure the drunk out of retirement, has made one last effort to persuade him to go to South Africa as he fine tunes his provisional squad list.
