Jamie Carragher and Ledley King are the shock call-ups to England's provisional 30-man World Cup squad - but there is no place for Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves.

Neither Carragher nor King has played a game for the Three Lions under Capello, although the Tottenham man was called into the squad for a double header against Slovakia and the Ukraine last year, only to be ditched a couple of days later on fitness grounds.

However, with doubts over Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, and Wes Brown and Joleon Lescott ruled out through injury, Capello has talked Carragher out of retirement and will have a look at the Liverpool man, plus King, who has just played four games in 15 days, before finalising his 23-man squad for South Africa.

            FULL SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green.

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock.

Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

Without another player capable of playing RB other than Johnson you would think Carra is now nailed on for the final squad.

In a surprise move which was widely predicted, Fabio Capello offered a recall to wing wizard Sir Stanley Matthews. A teetotal vegetarian, the throwback to a bygone age is remarkably fit and looks set to light up the world cup this summer with his magical dribbling, despite being dead for the last ten years.

However he failed to answer the manager's call and so is not in the squad.
                .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

pleased that scott parker got in - when i read this morning that it looked likely that hagreaves might get a call up and parker wouldn't i was shocked. Nothing against hagreaves, but he hasn't played for 2 years and parker has worked his little cotton socks off
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Darren Bent, Scott Parker, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock, Tom Huddlestone, Michael Dawson will drop off, with one of Shaun Wright-Phillips, Lennon or Walcott to go as well?

I think that was King Arthur... maybe this is the moment? Shock recall of legendary English king to bolster defence etc.

Carra obviously feels he ain't going to win anything with Liverpool, may as well try his luck with England, probably his best chance of picking a winners medal before he retires.

                                Sad but could be true
