England boss Fabio Capello will get a chance to assess his squad in match action tonight but I already know who I would leave behind when the plane leaves for South Africa.
Capello has named a provisional 30-man squad for England's final two friendlies against Mexico and Japan.
And I hope everyone in the squad gets a chance to stake their claim in the matches before Capello names his final 23.
But I wouldn't take Leighton Baines, Darren Bent, Tom Huddlestone, Jamie Carragher, Scott Parker, Matthew Upson or Shaun Wright-Phillips to South Africa.
There is no point bringing a lot of these lads into the squad if they are not going to get an opportunity though.
And I sincerely hope Sunderland striker Bent gets a chance to shine against Mexico tonight at Wembley.
It still wouldn't alter my belief when it comes to the players I would drop. But Bent, out of all of the fringe players above, has impressed me the most and I would like to see how his game is improving at holding the ball up in the Emile Heskey role.
I think our preferred front two will still be Wayne Rooney and target man Heskey.
Elsewhere I would go with Aston Villa left-back Stephen Warnock as a back-up to Ashley Cole.
Warnock is a more physical type of player than Baines in terms of his athleticism, so I would take him ahead of the Everton defender.
I would also take Spurs' Michael Dawson in front of West Ham's Upson.
Dawson has been the best English centre-back in the Premier League in 2010 and helped Tottenham into the Champions League by finishing fourth.
And I would leave Wright-Phillips at home too as I can see Aaron Lennon getting the nod to start on the right, with Theo Walcott as an impact player.
James Milner can also play on the right, so I don't think there will be a place for SWP.
Is it just me or does Collymore seem to be having a go at Carragher every other day...The latest piece is just pathetic though as he knows fine well Carra will be in the final 23 -given the lengths Capello has gone to bring him back into the fold - manager and player will say there's no guarantees but we know Carra will be going to World Cup.
Laughable stuff from the women beater...i seem to recall Carragher having one or two negative things to say about Stan in his autobiography so maybe Stan is getting his own back??
