We've already sold San Jose for £2.5m, that's something I guess. £6m for Benni and we're already on £8.5m. That added to £15m gives us £23.5m, though some of that of course has already gone on Jonjo Shelvey and potentially Danny Wilson if he comes in.

But the main plus has to be that we get to keep the money we make from sales. I would be devastated to lose the likes of Stevie and Fernando, but at least their loss would be cushioned by the considerable funds we would get from selling them.
    Forwards.......

What about the £6m or so we got in the January transfer window for Voronin and Dossena? Is this included in the £15m we're supposedly going to be 'given' or is it additional to it?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Fringe could be about 80% our squad (well they would be if they were ad other clubs).

i find it hard to believe that we would let yossi go for only £6m.

Why dont we hold out for £10m or there abouts for a decent creative midfield player ?

If he goes for £6m it will only show how ****ing desperate we are.

Lovin this article on this site from a few years back...

I wonder if the opinion held by the writer has changed any since?!

I’d like to quote an old song ‘you ain’t seen nothing yet’. Why is everyone going nuts after just a few weeks of the transfer window? This is nothing compared to the past when the beloved Steven Gerrard nearly left, or the uproar Michael Owen caused by leaving. This, so called saga, is merely another event in the continuing reality series ‘Liverpool FC’. The truth is, well what I think the truth is. Is that the media haven’t got a clue or Rafa is after this summer. Sure, occasionally, they’ll be onto something, but look at the signing of Lucas; I doubt anyone outside the Liverpool or Gremio football clubs knew that was coming. Rafa Benitez knows what he’s doing. Tom Hicks knows what he’s doing. George Gillette knows that he’s doing.

Do you know what you’re doing?

Benitez fury after being told there is no transfer cash

Published 23:00 01/06/10 By David Maddock

Rafa Benitez has revealed his anger and frustration after being told by his Anfield board there will be no money to spend in the summer.

Privately, the Liverpool boss is fuming after a secret meeting last week with MD Christian Purslow, where the Spaniard failed to get assurances he would be given the backing to rebuild his struggling squad.

American owner Tom Hicks had indicated earlier in the week that there would be money to spend in the transfer window, insisting that "there will be significant investment this summer."

Yet Benitez has told the people closest to him that the meeting was 'unproductive', and he expressed his extreme dissatisfaction at the board's lack of backing for his plans to radically overhaul his squad.

The Anfield manager wants money to invest in new players, and he is also looking for assurances that any money he raises through sales will be ploughed straight back into the playing squad.

Benitez is ready to offload several first team squad players like Yossi Benayoun, Ryan Babel and Albert Riera to raise funds, and he also has a plan in place should he lose any top stars like Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard or Javier Mascherano.

Privately, he has indicated he feels Torres may leave this summer, and he knows there is also a real chance that Gerrard too will depart, should the managerial position at the club remain unchanged.

If that happens, then Benitez wants the backing to bring in several top line players, but he got no such assurances last week, and his widely revealed anger suggests his future on Merseyside remains in doubt.

Sources close to Benitez made no secret of the manager's frustration after the talks last week, and there is little doubt the Spaniard will not be happy at what he sees as being forced to operate with his hands tied behind his back.

In an exclusive interview with this newspaper, the Liverpool boss insisted that he wanted to stay with the English club IF the situation allowed, but he believes the situation must include serious money to spend this summer.

Rafa Benitez: I'll stay at Liverpool... if they want me - Exclusive

His problem though, is that there are few escape routes available to him. After talking to Juventus for six months, the Italian side instead chose a home-grown manager, and Real Madrid - another club he has constantly been linked with - have just appointed Jose Mourinho.

Benitez IS on a short-list to replace Mourinho at Inter Milan, and he HAS had contact from the Italians, with rumours spreading in Italy that he held informal talks in the country last week.

But the Liverpool boss knows that following Mourinho is a thankless, some would say impossible task, especially given the animosity between the pair.

The former Chelsea manager delights in any opportunity to point out Benitez's failings at the best of times, and only recently insisted that Liverpool have gone backwards since 2004...cuttingly the year Benitez took over at Anfield.

It means there is no obvious escape route for the Reds manager, but he is clearly on a collision course with the Anfield board, after making clear his anger following the meeting with Purslow last week.

Benitez looks likely to claim a small victory way in the coming weeks though, after Liverpool moved closer to selling Benayoun to Chelsea for a fee of around £6million.

The transfer could be completed within the next week, with Benitez keen to get rid of the Israeli international after falling out with him, and dropping the winger from his squad for the final game of last season.

He's not going to get megabucks to spend. He should just decide if he's staying or going now. If he isn't prepared to work within the contsraints, he muct know, so should decide one way or another. Having this uncertainty all summer is going to be more damaging.

It sounds as though the battle is over if he can even keep the funds he raises through transfers, and from that article it seems that that is far from certain. It sounds as though he isn't even aware of the conditions he has to work under which puts him (or any other manager) in an impossible possition!

Does it mean 'managerial position' as in Rafa or the management of the club. If it means Rafa's position, I'm suprised that they haven't made more of it 'Gerrard won't play for Rafa' or 'It's you or me' type headlines etc. It sounds sufficiently vague that is could mean anything!

My guess is that the board want him out and they are making things as tough as possible for him to stay on. By having no transfer budget, no guarantees that if players are sold then the money will be re-invested in the team they are hoping that he walks.

If he does go then by some magic we will probably end up with a not laughable transfer kitty and the assurance that revenue from players sold will be available to the new manager.

                              Its quite pathetic really.

could that be considered constructive dismissal though...... ie not given the resources to do your job effectively? if the next man comes in and funds are available then my guess is that it would be a pretty much cut and dry case
