I do think he was backed into a corner somewhat though - we needed a RW and he needed to strengthen up front as well. May be if we got the fee for Cisse Rafa might have been inclined to get Alves instead of Pennant.

    thats complete crap there mate.

Xabi, Kuyt, Reina, Agger, Momo, Bellamy, Crouch and Garcia have been his most expensive signings....i wouldnt say any of them haven't been a success. Bellamy would be the only contentious choice, but IMO he has been a great player for us so far, buzzing around the ground, all he has lacked are goals.

Pennant is the one player he has spent a fair bit on that has failed (so far). Im not jumping on Rafa's back yet.

He has made a couple of minor mistakes in the transfer market, but they are on player in the 2-4 mill bracket. This doesnt hurt anywhere near as much as a 11million waster like Diouf or a 14million Cisse.

    Perspective neaded methinks

I was completely underwhelmed by the signing of Pennant, particularly at that price. Our initial bid of £3.5m (or whatever it was) was much nearer the mark. We keep on hearing from Rafa how he will not pay more than what he thinks a player is worth and assuming the board offered him the money, possibly this is why the Alves deal fell through - and why Rafa turned to Pennant. Yet Rafa clearly overspent on Pennant, unless he really thought the guy was worth nearly £7m, and if he did then he's more like Houllier than I thought.

I don't buy the backed into a corner. If he couldn't get his man then he just needed to get a competent body into the squad for about 2 million which he could easily have done just as cover. Then kept his powder dry instead of blowing his load on someone as poor as Pennant has always been.

Christ Pennants only been with us for 5 minutes. He's hardly been played & people expect him to come off the bench & turn the match against the form team in the country. Pennant needs time to settle him. I'm not his biggest fan fan by any means but give him a chance.

I don't see any threads knocking Kuyt yet in our 2 biggest games (Chelsea & Man U) away he's had our best chances & missed them. Pennant, like Kuyt must be given time to settle before a judgement is made.

The difference I think is that Pennant's performances are consistent with his career so far. And Kuyt we're still finding out about but at least works hard.

It makes me uneasy that an Arsenal cast off is a first teamer for us.

He was complete and utter **** out there yesterday. The guy didnt even look interested, and when he made a mistake trying to be fancy with the ball on the wing he hid afterwards. After that moment he didnt even touch the ball

Even Rafa looked effed off at him when he lost the ball. I dont mind a player losing the ball trying to be fancy, but its the fact that instead of trying harder the next time, as Speedy did. He bloody went and hid from the fans so they wouldnt get on his back.......pissweak

buck up your ideas Jerm, you wont be here long if you dont

One small problem with your post - you should have started another thread for every player that has played this season. Whilst I admit that Pennant has been a bit crap, the rest of the squad have been just as dire. At least Pennany isn't playing every game, unlike Alonso, who has been woefully poor yet still keeps his place in the middle ahead of Gerrard.

you sound like i did, i was all for giving Pennant a fair go.

But yesterday he was hopeless, he hid after he made that mistake and the UTD fans laughed....thats what i would call a coward

I wasnt expecting him to come on and change the game.....but i expected him to come on and give it a red hot go. He didnt, and now he has lost my support

I don't think Pennant's the answer, I didn't think he was good enogh when we signed him & I still don't. However, I can't blame him for yesterdays mess. The game was long gone before Pennant came on.

                    we were 1-0 down.

It doesnt matter how bad you are playing, one goal gets a point.

He has the skill, i truely believe he does.....but he just doesnt "want" it. He had the opportunity to come on and TRY to make a difference and get us back in the match....but he didnt even look interested. If you can't get up for a Liverpool vs Man Utd game then god help you

Pennant was interviewed soon after he'd joined, and it read like he'd thought 'he'd made it.'

I honestly don't think he has the mentality to truly succeed.
