I am a huge fan of Rafa but...
he has always made mistakes that were obvious than most other manager's mistakes and this year he has simply made too many of those mistakes. This, plus the fact that he is clearly no longer able to motivate certain of the players has in my view been a bigger cause of this season's failures than injuries or a lack of spending power. So he had to go.
However, G & H must also go; we also need, as various players have said, 4 or 5 top class additions to the team; and we need to re-discover our reputation for doing things the 'proper way'.
I would have thought that the change in manager and in owners were the first things to sort out, and that is what Broughton is trying to do. He will know whether G&H will really release enough money to sort the squad out. If they will, he will go for - and be able to get - a top rate manager. Otherwise, he will know he has to go with an interim manager until the sale is completed and more money is available. He will also know that that means probably losing Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano. He will know the effect that that will have on the value of G&H's shares - I would have thought the effect would be hugely negative - and G&H will be factoring that into their decisions about (a) when to sell (ie wjhat price to accept) and (b) how much this summers' transfer kitty should be.
So I am sort of optimistic that this is the beginning of the end. So happy, but also very sad about Rafa who I think has fought long and hard for what the supporters want.
