Former LFC manager Rafa Benitez donates “significant” amount to Liverpool’s Lily Centre

THE co-founder of Liverpool’s Lily Centre today admitted she was “overwhelmed” after receiving a “significant” donation from Rafa Benitez.
The former Liverpool FC boss, who on Thursday gave £96,000 to the Hillsborough Family Support Group, yesterday helped another charity he holds close to his heart.
Though co-founder Peggy O’Brien would not disclose the amount on the cheque Benitez wrote, she revealed it would go a long way to helping the day-to-day running of The Lily Centre – a breast cancer support group – for a considerable time.
Mrs O’Brien said: “It was an absolutely fantastic gesture and we are all over the moon – it was completely overwhelming.
“We have known Rafa and [his wife] Montse for a long time but we did not expect this at all. You just do not expect people to give you money like that.
“Rafa and Montse have been good to us in the past and they did things that people would not know about, such as when he gave us Fernando Torres’ first Liverpool shirt for a raffle, which raised £4,900.
“But this just came completely out of the blue. We know they are moving on because Rafa has changed jobs, but we will keep in contact with them.”
Mrs O’Brien and Winnie Keating set up the Lily Centre, which is based in Silvester Street, Kirkdale, 11 years ago
They now have 750 female volunteers and two men helping them when they open every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Mrs O’Brien said: “This gesture will just help make things that bit easier for us and helps with the cost of running the centre.
“We do not get any government funding and we do not have any paid workers. Myself and Winnie both had breast cancer and we started this off from nothing.
“Everything is done on a volunteer basis and we cannot thank Rafa and Montse enough for helping us.
“They have supported us ever since they came to Liverpool in 2004 and there is no doubt they will remain our friends.”

Hmm, it was very disappointing. I think there is a danger of people letting their disappointment cloud their judgement though.Originally posted by red g View Posti dont think it was one bad season it was a horrific season.
Hang on, that's not entirely true. I think we pretty much all agree the reality of the situation is we have sacked a top class manager and all plausible replacements are not in his league, one way or another. So of course people are supportive of Rafa.Originally posted by red g View PostIf we were getting in hiddink, cappello or mourinho or someone of that ilk I dont think we would see so many want rafa back i think its more the stark reality of Hodgson coming in which has lead to this upsurge in Rafa;s support
However for a long time now it's been clear that this would be the situation. and certainly plenty of people on here, including me, have argued that would be the case before Rafa was sacked. It's not a reaction to subsequent events.
Meanwhile people who argued for him to be sacked to be replaced by whatever stellar manager they happened to select were not in touch with reality, as events have proved..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

No we shouldn't have. If you don't want to have a constructive argument with me I suggest you keep your mouth shut mate. Sarky comments like this are what makes forums go downhill as threads descend into needless arguments.Originally posted by PeteBest View PostWe should have put you on as manager.
I know you fully backed Rafa last season, as did I, We were off the minority and I find it strange now to see all of a sudden everyone backing him and wishing he had stayed. But Rafa did made mistakes during his time at Liverpool and I don't think it takes a football manager to see where some of the problems were.Forwards.......

FGood post but there were a few of us that wanted Kenny before GH even got the job. I personally would want Kenny back even if we could have our pick of anyone in the entire world. Here's why, with every passing year I feel more removed from the game and club I've loved for the best part of 30 years. I don't like what the game has begun. So romantically I crave a bit of glories past. A last shot at falling back in love. I want the hairs on my neck to stand up when players come out, I want to be unable to eat before a big game, I want to feel down for a week when we lose and high as a kite when we win, I want to feel proud of my team again. Things I haven't felt for way too long. It is heart over head but that's the best way to enjoy life in my experience.Originally posted by Neil Young View PostHmm, it was very disappointing. Of course if you feel Dalglish or whoever we might get is a better manager than Benitez then that's a different argument. I'm certainly happy to accept not everyone would agree with my underlying premise.Originally posted by BobTheCharmer View PostF

I have two concerns about Kenny, both of which plenty of others have said too: he's been out of management for a decade and, what's more of a personal thing, I worry it's a backward-looking move. Both of these things together make me feel anxious about his appointment. But the appointment of anyone else - assuming the likes of Hodgson is the best we could get - would signal Europa League ambitions, getting the most out of lesser players, more Moyes than Ancelotti (if you see what I mean). So I'm certainly happy to call for Kenny's appointment in the circumstances; I just feel less confident about him than you do and obviously I hope events would prove you right and me wrong.
It's interesting what you say about the lack of excitement you feel and I genuinely hope you get it back, whoever is appointed. I wonder if you will though, no matter who's the boss. You know, once something like that has gone, it's perhaps not quite the same in future. And maybe other things are more important for you now. It's only a thought - you'd know whether it applies to you or not.
As for me, I certainly feel more alienated from LFC than I have done before. I put it down to the owners above all. In short, we're all pissed off.

I am making sarky comments because you have been disrespectful (not in that post but another one). Rafa made mistakes, every other manager makes them, he never deserved to be sacked let alone treated as disrespectfully as that.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostNo we shouldn't have.
