One thing I will say is he makes Stevie look personable, which is a real feat given Gerrard's media "personality"... My parents have got into Gavin and Stacey in a big way lately, and are Sky+ing every repeat and seem to watch them over and over again
I don't hate James Corden like some of you do, he's not comic genius, although I do think he's proven in the past he's a good actor, he's just been on the box way too much, and is stretching the ladish humour angle beyond the nauseating.
That said the only time I ever pay attention to Gavin and Stacey when they're watching it is when Rob Brydon is on screen, now that my friends, is comic genius
