    Hillsborough slur

    Same old Tories

Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport claims that no England fans arrested at the World Cup means the dark days of hooliganism at Heysel and Hillsborough are behind us.

"Well yeah of course it was disappointing because we have this enormous talent and for some reason they just didn’t gel as a team but I have to say, you know as a Minister I was incredibly encouraged by the example set by the England fans, I mean not a single arrest for a football related offensive and the terrible problems that we had in Heysel and Hillsborough in the 1980s seem now to be behind us and I think you know there is small grounds for encouragement there even though obviously we are very disappointed about the result."

Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

For what it's worth he has since apologised.

The sheer ignorance about the matter is one thing, but to make such a throwaway comment on such a sensitive subject is arrogant in the extreme

The culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has apologised after appearing to suggest that crowd unrest was responsible for the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans died.

He said he was sorry if his remark, made in an interview discussing England's poor World Cup performance, caused any offence to supporters and the families of those killed in April 1989 at the FA Cup semi-final.

Hunt was quoted as saying that he was "incredibly encouraged by the example set by the England fans. I mean, not a single arrest for a football-related offence, and the terrible problems that we had in Heysel and Hillsborough in the 1980s seem now to be behind us".

In a statement today, Mr Hunt said: "I know that fan unrest played no part in the terrible events of April 1989 and I apologise to Liverpool fans and the families of those killed and injured in the Hillsborough disaster if my comments caused any offence."
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Glad he's apologised, but he was always going to

He doesn't explain why he said what he did though, and just contradicts his statement by saying he knows 'fan unrest played no part'

If that's the case Jezzer, why say it in the first place?

I think it is ignorance. A lot of people just don't know what happened that day, or have not been sufficiently interested to remember.
            Oh I don't know.

Yeah I can understand that, just. But regardless of the facts of what happened at the time, and especially considering his position, he should be sufficiently aware of the sensitivity surrounding it to refrain from making what was essentially a flippant comment.

                Sports minister FFS!!

That's it though. They are politicians first, and experts in their departmental field, about 5th.

I'm not condoning him. He's an ignorant ****wit, but he's one of many.

                          What a Jeremy Hunt.

About time we had a more contemporary coinage - no-one under the age of 25 has ever heard of Gareth Hunt.
                          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

No excuse for it. It's not like he made an off the cuff, throwaway or slipped up with the remark. It was part of a long sentence that he'd clearly planned.

But, hey, it's ok cos he said sorry. **** off, tory cunt.
