    Wingers

With Roy we're looking at 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. The interesting thing for me is wingers and how he'll play them.

Barca line up with a right footed left winger (Henry, Inieasta) cutting in and vise versa on the other side (Messi, Pedro).

Munich do the same with Ribery and Robben playing on the opposite flanks that you would expect.

Fulham played the same way with Duff on the right and Gera on the left.

This system works well with attacking full backs which we have.

When he was at Blackburn he played with two traditional wingers. Wilcox/Duff (left) and Ripley (right).

What do you think we'll see the next season? Playing like Barca and Munich would be OK for me.

Depends on how low we are down the table. I fear wingers will be the last of our worries.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

I know, seems to be plenty of that about. Hope its different at Melwood and in the squad. Need to be positive.

The thing is that the quality of the players in the wide positions at Munich and Barcelona is key to the way they play that system. They also don't really play a 4-4-2 and the flexibility of a more triangular central setup is key. We have no one of a comparable level and attempts to get Riera playing like this last season were disastrous. At Fulham unlike those two teams the reason for the use of 'inside out wingers' was largely defensive. I guess you are right that Roy is likely to employ something 4-4-2 ish in shape though.

I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest he'll end up with a compromise - Kuyt as simulacrum of an 'inside out' winger on the right with Johnson overlapping and a defensive leftback with a genuine winger that side (either Riera or someone bought in).

Fabio Capello is an amazing coach who has proven himself at club level, the English team were just absolutely ****. Even if you blame him for some his track record isnt as bad as others, most coaches around the world have at least 1 **** up especially if they have been in the game that long.

I find it faintly ridiculous that people feel that the subtleties of tactics can be reduced to a string of three to four numbers. I seem to remember Chelsea playing systems you could describe as 4-4-2 last season and doing pretty well, Spurs and United to some degree too.

I think Hodgson will do wonders with Babel if he isn't sold.

Spain play so much better when they play 1 upfront.
