    Gerrard and Torres staying- Hodgson

    BBC

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has declared the club are not going to sell captain Steven Gerrard and Spanish international striker Fernando Torres.
Hodgson has held talks with duo and said: "Steven Gerrard is not for sale - I made that clear to him."
On Torres, he added: "He is not for sale and we don't welcome any offers for him. We want to keep him."

However, Hodgson has tried without success to contact midfielder Javier Mascherano to discuss his future.
"I have left him voice messages and sent him texts but had no reply," said the new Anfield boss.
"To be fair to him, that's not unusual because he's had a tough World Cup and I believe he's gone back to Argentina.
"It's not always easy to get in touch with people. I have tried to reach him to make clear I am happy to talk with him at his convenience."

Torres picked up a thigh injury in his country's World Cup final win over Netherlands on 11 July and is expected to be out for about three weeks.
Hodgson met with him ahead of the 26-year-old, who has been linked with a move away from Anfield, going on a holiday following his exertions in South Africa.

"I have met with Fernando," he confirmed. "I found him to be a very pleasant man and we had a nice conversation.
"As far as we are concerned, he is a Liverpool player and we want him to remain a Liverpool player."
He added: "My conversation with him was only short because I had to leave to come to the training camp in Switzerland.

I told him (Steven Gerrard) I supported the club's policy that we don't want to sell our best players and have to start building again
    Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson
"We spoke about football, the World Cup, his injury, and I told him how much I am looking forward to working with him.

"Christian Purslow [Liverpool managing director] was also at the meeting and chatted to Fernando for a lot longer after I left but my chat with him was only about football matters."
Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League last season as they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Their poor campaign and the club's financial state, which sees them up for sale and believed to be in debt to the tune of about £350m, resulted in speculation concerning the futures of Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano.
But, despite admitting a "disenchanted" mood within the squad since taking over after the exit of former Reds boss Rafael Benitez, Hodgson is determined to keep his key players to restore Liverpool's on-pitch fortunes.

Gerrard, 30, would be pivotal to his plans and Hodgson said: "I have met with Steven and thought the talks were positive.
"We are in a situation where we hear our players are being courted by other teams but it is all just rumours.
"What we haven't had is a club wanting to buy Steven Gerrard.
"I told him I supported the club's policy that we don't want to sell our best players and have to start building again."

sound spromising ref torres and gerrard. - If mashcher is to go it'll be a shame, but **** it - we need players who want to be here, and he's going to be one thats constantly linked with a move, if not this transfer window, then same will start happening in january etc - make sure that we got £30m that can be spent on good enough replacement and help fund the signing of a first choice left back and i'll be will to accept it.
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Im not bothered about Mascherano anymore. He's a quality player but if he's so desperate to get out of Liverpool then we should sell him for £30m. He's the captain of Argentina im sure can get big money for him

Still havent heard it being said that Gerrard and Torres themselves want to stay. The club can say not for sale, but if either asks to go, is the club going to say no?

Mascha is a cock. I really really hope we get rid of him. Roy saying it's understandable but it's not.

          Please take him Rafa.

Bye Mash! Couldn't even get in the west ham team and no ****er would touch him. Yet we gave him the chance and this is the repayment we get. I lost all respect for mash when he was whoring himself to barca last season.

We're asking players to be honest about their intentions, that's exactly what he's doing IMO. He wants out and is not trying to hide the fact, unlike Owen & McManaman who were supposedly local lads.

We could potentially make a few bob in profit on him which would be an added bonus. Bye Mascher, you always played with your heart on your sleeve and hopefully you'll be **** if we ever play against you

He can't answer his phone even once to hear what Roy has to say? He wants to go then that's fine but don't hide behind an agent like a pussy.

will be gutted to see masher leave, but then if we spent the money on another more mobile DM and other areas of the team I wouldnt be to fussed.

Awesome at what he does, but he is no Essien

                    or his agent isnt .......

if he really wanted out he would have said so himself, this way if barca/milan dont come up with the dosh he can say it was agent talk all along.

snakey little cunt, not honest at all imo

                      I think that translates to,

"If either of them want to leave, they will need to put in a transfer request".

                      .

although i am not sure hodgson would have worded it as he did if he wasnt confident both would stay.

well look a bit weak if either of them leave now imo

I see it as both of them wanting out and they've told him thats how they feel. he's saying that he has told them but he's not given any indication of their response to him. that they're nice chaps and talks were positve?

why the hell tho would he let on that the purse was talking 'for a lot longer with fernando' than he was?

could be anything. nando grilling him about takeover/funds etc etc with positive news from 'cecil'. but then it could even be the two of them agreeing terms under which he will leave - transfer requests, loyalty bonuses etc etc. we have the scarf photo, the injury (value/risk for new club) and hisn unhappiness with the quality of the squad. they could have spent ages discussing the people were signing as we're almost loaded. could be anything...

not sure how you make such a negative outcome from what was said to be honest.

So i presume you are pretty sure that all 3 of masher, torres and Gerrard will be gone by season starts?

one thing is for sure, if they want out like you seem to think, there will be enough buyers

Let's read what was said - disgregard it and come up with your own interpretation of what was said.

I think Roy is just being upfront and honest about what was said between him and Nando - it's pointless trying to look into a crystal ball and guess what might or might not have been said - basically comments such as these are paramount to scaremongering - not really needed in our current climate is it now!
