    Jonjo Shelvey interview

Jonjo Shelvey today spoke of his determination to make an instant impact at Anfield as he prepares for his first season in the top flight of English football.

The 18-year-old England youth international signed for the Reds at the back end of last season and is now away with the squad in Switzerland gearing up for the new season - and his first taste of life as a Premier League player.

Regarded by many as one of the brightest young talents in English football - and described by his former academy manager as a player in the Steven Gerrard mould - the attacking midfielder arrived on Merseyside with a blossoming reputation, and he insists he won't be wasting any time in attempting to prove his worth at Anfield.

In his first interview as a Liverpool player from the Reds' training base in Bad Ragaz, Shelvey said: "Being at Liverpool is what every kid dreams of. When I was in school and in the playground I used to pretend to be players like Steven Gerrard, so it's unreal to think I'll be training with these players day in and day out.

"At Charlton training was just shooting and five-a-sides and I was getting home at 1pm. At Liverpool we're not getting home till 2pm or 3pm and that's what I needed. I needed to be somewhere where I could learn about the game because it got to the point where I wasn't learning at Charlton. I'm glad to be around the best people you could possibly be around.

"I'm really excited and can't wait for the season to start now. I want to get at least 20 games under my belt this season so I can start getting myself into it. I am confident, you have to be. When you are 18 years of age and you are getting thrown into games at Anfield then you can't have any fear. You have to go and do what you do."

Having represented England at both U16 and U17 levels, Shelvey became Charlton's youngest ever player before going on to net eight goals in 49 appearances for the London club.

A softly-spoken but fiercely determined youngster, Shelvey is clearly confident of succeeding on the pitch at Anfield - but how has he coped with crossing the north-south divide?

"Obviously it's a different lifestyle compared to being at Charlton," he said. "The training is harder, everyone is a top quality professional, so it's totally different. It's different but I'm enjoying it. It's hard but I'm coping with it and it's good to be here.

"I thought I would find it a lot harder but I've had a lot of help from the club. I have my mum and dad coming up which makes it a lot easier. My dad comes up on a Monday and Tuesday and then I'll take him to Lime Street station on a Wednesday morning before training. My mum then comes up and she'll be there when I get home, which is great because she loves to cook.

"It still hasn't really sunk in now that I could be playing in the Premier League week in and week out. It's unreal."

He may now be dreaming of pulling on the red shirt, but it was only four years ago when the self-confessed West Ham fan was left distraught at the hands of Liverpool as Gerrard snatched FA Cup glory away from the Hammers with a last-gasp equaliser in Cardiff.

"I was away in Italy with Charlton at the time of that game and we watched it in a pub. There were a few Liverpool fans in there and they were rubbing it in all day," he recalls.

"I may be a West Ham fan but when you watch Liverpool on the television and hear the crowd singing it gives you goose-pimples. It will be amazing to play there. I can't wait. I'll probably faint before I walk out."

And when Shelvey does realise his dream and make his debut in a Liverpool shirt, what can the fans expect?

"I'm an all-action player," he says. "I can defend, although I'd rather be bombing on to score goals and create things. I used to play in the hole behind the striker at Charlton but I prefer to play in central midfield to dictate the play.

"From watching the Premier League on the television you seem to get a lot more time and space on the ball compared to League One and that will suit me.

"I just can't wait to show the fans what I can do."

He seems a very confident lad. He makes it sound like he'll be playing a bit the season. He mentioned 20 matches? I wonder if he meant the reserves cause he'd have to be doing really well to get that much game time in his first full season for an 18yr old.

Not sure anyone at Charlton would be happy reading this either.
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

I'm pleased he's got some bollocks and isn't afraid to stick his neck on the line, just needs to back it up now
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Good interview – does sound confident, but you need to have something about you and I’m glad he is talking about breaking through......i’d be a bit pissed off he spent a year in the ressies never to be seen.

20 games seems I a high target but fair play to him....he wants to achieve high standards...i’d rather that than he signed, thought he’d done the hard work getting to Liverpool, and then became a bit of a ****. The hard work starts now,

I have mentioned in other threads – Shelvey, along with Kelly and prob Pacheco, i really want to see push on this season and play in 15+ games. I think that would be great if they could, for themselves and for the squad. I don’t see any reason why they can’t this season. – With europa games, domestic cup, and 38 league games, they should be used plenty – i’d like to see them be told that they are going to start every europa game alongside a mixture of first teamers and squad players, to give them the experience etc – add to that the odd sub appearance here and there when we can, I can’t see any reason why it’s not achievable.
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Do we know what's likely to happen with Pacheco?

Thought i'd read stuff about him being shipped out. Hopefully not though.

The number of games Shelvey, Pacheco, Kelly etc get will surely depend on how we do in cup competitions as they are likely to feature heavily in these games. If we go out in the first rounds it's unlikely they'll get many games, if we go far they should get alot more. Having said that our squad is lacking in numbers, so they could be on the bench regularly and a few injuries and who knows. I just hope we handle their development correctly and avoid a situation like we had with Insua last year.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I know what you mean but if your good enough, your old enough IMO. They shouldn't be thrown in the deep end but they'll / we'll never know unless we give them a chance. Many of us last year were screaming to see pacheco given more game time and it didn't happen enough for me. Hopefully Roy will give the youth a chance off the bench at least

He started for Spain in their first game of the Euro's u-19, they won Croatia 2-1, he played 89 mins. He seems to be rated and I hope we give him some real chances this season.

I'm not disputing the fact that if you're good enough you're old enough, I believe that at Insua was good enough to play first team football, in isolated games or a few games at a time, (like some of our young players at the moment) but wasn't ready to be depended on for the whole season, he was too inexperienced, and playing regularly places different demands on a player. I believe that is something you have to build up to, and as a result is something that takes time. It's particularly important with defenders as they have to keep their focus for the whole game. One mistake is very costly, this isn't typically the case with attacking players, and as such they can come through more quickly.

I don't think Insua would be leaving if our financial problems weren't so bad. It's not like we have an over supply of LB's. He suffered due to the whole teams poor form last year and shouldn't feel he has failed at LFC. I read somewhere that he said he wanted to be playing regularly hence his decision to leave. Maybe he know's that we had planned to buy a "big name" player and he didn't want to stick around to be an understudy? Just a thought.

Haven't you just contradicted yourself there?

                      No I don't think so.

We wouldn't be needing to sell him if we had cash to buy a new Big name player as compared to him not wanting to play second fiddle if we sign a "big name " player. I hope that makes better sense.

                      It does to me

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

i think Shelvey, Pacheco, Kelly and maybe Spearing will all get extended game time this season... noises have come out that LFC will be prioritising the league this year..... i think it will depend on how we are going in the league but if we get a good start (first 6 - 8 games or so) and there are some hard fixtures in there, then i think we will really prioritise the league and push on that way. That should allow the europa, league cup and maybe even fa cups as nice-to-haves as opposed to our bread and butter......
