    Brian Clough

Just watched a docu on the man; how good a manager for Liverpool do the older ones amongst us think he would have been??

I know we couldn't hve won much more than we did during his prime era, but i think he would have been ideal as a liverpool manager.

    Thoughts??

Not LFC material at all, great manager though he was. Too much of a loudmouth I think. I know Shanks wasn't shy and retiring but he was different to Clough.

And Ol' Big 'Ed said some terrible **** about Hillsborough, although subsequently retracted the remarks and apologised.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

totally agree about hillborough (tbh i hadn't taken that in to account), but sadly the demon drink had taken hold by then, i'm talking about 70s/early 80's with taylor in tow.

His respect of Shankly was immense

Clough was for Clough. Sir Bill was for football and LFC. Clough got pissed after the game (fair enough I suppose) Sir Bill went home and scrubbed the oven.

        Nah - never.

Yeah I realised you were referring to that period, but I think the comments show the sort of man he was capable of being.

But yeah fair point about the booze.

mick the click - agree mate.

Tend to agree with Shaggy, whilst Clough was a unique and incredible character and manager, something about him just wouldnt have made a good fit for LFC.

i think it depends which clough we are talking about.

the man in the end was a shadow of his young self and the game had moved on.

still to have hated leeds and the way they played isnt all bad.

his achievements in the game are amazing really.

he needed taylor with him though but a great partnership.

i also like his idea of fining managers for players fowling.

To be fair to Brian, he has what is clearly the best surname in the history of everything.

As others have said - he wouldn't have fitted us. You may as well ask how great a manager Alex Ferguson would have been for us. Truly great manager though, and definitely had Shankly-esque qualities - he believed totally in Shanks' quote "football is a simple game complicated by people who should know better". His teams always kept the ball on the deck, everyone on the pitch had a simple role to play and were expected to play it well, and absolutely no cheating, gamesmanship or arguing with the ref.

If it hadn't been for the Hillsborough comments (despite the subsequent retraction and apology - possibly the only time in his life he ever admitted publicly that he was totally wrong, for those who doubt the sincerity of that apology) he'd be remembered as an even greater legend.

Clough wanted, and expected, to be manager of England above anything. Fine aspiration, and I reckon he would have been more successful than Greenwood - but I suspect my little sister might have been too.

                        read this..

"Former Forest player and successful manager, Martin O'Neill upon hearing of his mentor's death said: "Brian Clough was absolutely sensational, a truly brilliant manager. I don’t think Brian would disagree with it either, he would have been the first one to say he was the greatest of all time."

                        Fact is, he wasn't.

who was the greatest manager of all time?

i am not saying clough is

but league titles with provincial clubs and two european cups with forrest is hard to argue with.

i think during that period he was up there.

i like to think sir Bob is the greatest though

You can't say 'fact' - it's a matter of opinion, and he's certainly got a case. Two European Cups with Nottingham Forest. Winning the league with two different clubs - Nottingham Forest and Derby County. He's up there with the greats, though personally I'd put Shankly, Paisley, and Ferguson slightly above him.
